Last Bank Holiday of a rather wet summer season, rain held off and I visited the open day of the Whit Hern Bowls Club a long standing promise to do so, it meant missing Audreys usual bank holiday roast beef dinner at her home, sigh.
Met lots of people there and seemed to be a grand success. Had a hotdog and a nice cup of tea, bought a cricket book on Ian Botham, only 30p. Nice people, nice day.
26 08 2011

Last minute catch up with the West Cheshunt question to garner support and ensure that as much focus has been put on the campaign. Making sure that everyone has submitted their two penny worth either for or against although I am quite confident that common sense will prevail and it will be an avalanche of ‘no no no’. Received a letter today which I added as additional to my submission.
29 07 2011
Birthday, but, early morning meeting on the West Cheshunt question. Good resolution and last submission wording agreed.
Later lots of good wishes, opening pressies and reflection.
10 07 2011
To Cuffley Village Hall for a summer performance from one of my favourite dance groups, Step2Step. Was bowled over with the show, very hot inside but they all performed to an exceptional high standard we are lucky to have such great talent in our borough. I have said it before so I say it again. Spencer on show and really performed, well done and good luck for the future.
09 07 2011

04 07 2011
Appeals at Hitchin Boys School, never been to the school so a first and a real departure for the county. Difficult day, got  lost in the one way system stumbled across it by accident. A lot of hard cases not help by some local infusion. Not very happy, weather hot as well and a long day.
Late evening engagement, addressed the Windmill Club at Wolsey Hall on ‘teens unite. The club is forty years strong and have not looked back. They have  agreed to adopt teens as their charity and work to raise funds for the cause. Good speech, Jim attended and a good night had by all. Long conversation after and late, very late home.
02 07 2011
Attended the borough community open day, all the fun of the community fair. Met some old friends and chatted, good weather but numbers not so hot this year. Plenty of fun though and lots to see and do, tried my hand at hula hoop, halcyon days of summer!.

07 05 2011

Busy day ahead with visit to Capel Manor College for the Mayor of Enfield”s open day. Loads of bling on show. Bumped into a group of Broxbourne students at the college, nice chat. Quick photo. no time to stay for tea and cake off to Goffs Oak to present the league title shield to Goffs Oak FC for winning the 1st Division title. However, met by a County FA rep. who told me the game was abandoned at halftime due to a serious injury, broken leg, to the away goalkeeper. Had a photo. taken with some of the Goffs Oak players and the shield.

Quick change and then off to the Civic Hall with the LM for the BTC production of ‘Singin in the Rain’, lovely show despite some technical hitches with a piece of the scenery and video, however, it did not distract or detract from the overall performance of the show. Well done you players, keep treading those boards.

Quick dash over to Cheshunt to catch the end of the Miss Hoddesdon and Broxbourne Carnival Queen. Spoke to the winner, lots of photos. Chips on the way home only food all day. Very tired.

Local election day and AV referendum on voting reform.

Poor weather at the start of the day. Up to Goffs Oak polling station. candidate in place, slow steady stream of voters. Later with GP had breakfast at the local garden centre. Then off to the office and engaged re. briefings. Briefly back to the polling station before heading off to Hoddesdon for a mayoral visit.

Made a speech to welcome everyone and set Thomas the Tank train off on its journey to start the 3 days of fun. The whole church has been transformed into a wonderful collection of trains sets, motor bikes, flowers, wedding gowns and much more, a real community approach to everyday community life. Well done.

Quick turnaround to head back to my patch and attend ‘Founders Day’ for the Cheshunt Rifle and Pistol Club. Bang on 2pm, arrive at stated time, other guests tucking into lunch and coming to the end. Very good visit, tried my nad st the range, not bad, dead eye dick is now my nickname. Drew the raffle, had a cup of tea and a sausage from the barbie. Long day at an end, although I did catch a hour or so in my office.

29 04 2011

Royal wedding day between William and Kate. Weather held fine and all the pomp and circumstance displayed across our TV screens. Busy day for me to celebrate with street and house parties across the borough. Started off at Blackwood Court in Turnford, a re-inactment of the wedding was taking place when I arrived. All the residents joining in for a fun and festive day. Spoke to many, joined them for lunch and made a speech. A really good time. Then off to Saunder Close in Cheshunt.

Street party in full swing, lots of residents from the road joining in table and chairs all out. Peace and quiet at the end of a long day washed down with tea and cake, nice. Back home late.

28 04 2011

Early morning visit to John Warner School to meet with the Year 8 School Council. Met by the the chair of governors. Great ineraction between the students, articulate and ready cheer leaders for the school. Lively exchange and really good company to be with. Easter Saturday and St George’s Day. Off to slay the dragon and start the week end festivities at Grundy Park. Glorious hot weather and plenty for the crowds to do to have fun. Long day but plenty to cheer on, got very wet and rode a train, at least 2k people attending during the day. LM joined me with my daughter and GD, Ruby. Lovely.

Not met on my arrival and despite the broiling heat no refreshment on offer and had to make my own arrangements. Stayed for over 4 hours, meet and greet many people but not the organiser, shame.

Bumped into some dear favourites, the Capel Players, a local group of singers who have raised money for childrens charities around Hertfordshire since 1984. They inform me that the charity from May 14th 2011 will be the Mayor’s Charity, teens unite, wow bring it on.

19 04 2011

Early morning meeting ahead of the full council tonight. Dragged on longer than anticipated short time to get ready to go the Olympic White Water Rafter venue at Waltham Cross. It is a VIP day to test the facility before it opens to the public on the 29th April 2011.

Go with the leader, lots of VIP’s around hear speeches before being decked out in wet suits and helmet to boldy go where no mayor has gone before. An hour’s training before hitting the water for fun, thrills and a white knuckle ride, Thorpe Park was never like this!. Worth the joy and experience to ride the Olympic circuit.

Back late to pick up my papers, read a nice letter from the High Sheriff and the Mayor of Dacorum and Chairman of East Herts. Very touching.  Head home for change and full council later tonight. A rollercoaster meeting that went well, difficult topics and issues to resolve. My last full meeting as Mayor, sad really. Congrats later, and a private word from someone who told me it was the best chaired meeting for 25 years. Nice.

Mayor’s Civic Lunch at Bishop’s College with the LM and DM/DM. Lots of guests with the good and great to celebrate Broxbourne Life and pay tribute to all those who not only contribute to our borough, but, from across Hertfordshire who do so. Absolute stunning success, one of those events in which everything goes right and seemed to work. Weather perfect and a wow factor in the air.

I was able to say thanks to many hard working staff, understand the problems on a day to day basis and gauge the reaction of the services we provide from the punters. All in all a good experience and worth the chance as Mayor to see things as they are first hand. Impressed with the level of drive and commitment from the elcted SO members.

Left to Broxbourne High Street to open a new food express mart. Always keen to encourage business and ensure small high road shops are well supported. Good crowd on hand for me to cut the ribbon.

All sorted, a few free tickets were given to the bowls team, new conductor in place and the choir went on stage.

Expected numbers were 100 in the event just on 70, so cannot grumble. A real treat for everyone, really pleased, all the aims and objectives achieved.  Tea and cake provided and I gave out a community award to a rather special young lady.

With the LM the gathering of the all people for the unveiling of the memorial to the ten US servicemen who lost their lives over the skies of Cheshunt in 1944. Family and officials from the USA in attendance.

A very solemn and moving occasion and squares the circle of remembrance, the original plaque bought by the townsfolk back in 1944, hanging in the local library, and the naming of the dual carriageway after the officer in charge of the plane near to the site of the crash.

Down memory lane for alot of people and of course the sorrow and thoughts of the daughter, who attended, of the officer in charge of the ill fated plane. All remembered with honour and pride of their nation and by the grateful peoples of Cheshunt and the wider community of Broxbourne.

21 01 2011

In office dealing with corres. and mail. Just once in a while a gem comes through the post. This was a letter from David Halfhide who I had met a few weeks earlier in a very humbling situation. His grandfather Frank Halfhide, who live in Hoddesdon, served in the 1st World War, wounded by a sniper and subsequently died of his injuries.

The gem in the letter was a newspaper cutting of the Hertfordshire Mercury of 1921, reporting the death and funeral of Frank who had died the previous week, still in hospital, from his injuries received in the Somme over two years earlier.

Frank Halfhide was born in Ware in 1890. He lived with his wife and three children, two girls and a boy, in Stanstead Road, Rye Park, Hoddesdon. He worked at Christies Brewery in Hoddesdon.

During the 1st World War, in January 1917 he joined the Norfolk Regiment, and later whilst in France transferred to the Machine Gun Corp. On 24th August 1918, whilst attending to a wounded colleague he was shot and wounded by a sniper.

On the 27th August 1918 he arrived in England and taken to a London Hospital. He stayed in hospital until May 1919 and transferred to the Hertford County Hospital in Hertford. He remained in hospital until 1921 where he died as a result of his injuries.

His funeral was recorded in the Hertfordshire Mercury on Saturday 21st March 1921. It was a grand and fine affair, a military funeral. His coffin was drawn on a gun carriage draped in the Union Jack and drawn by six horses. A band and guard of honour led the procession to Hoddesdon cemetry.

Hundreds of people lined the street as the cortege passed. The Chairman of Hoddesdon Urban District Council led the town’s mourning. Solemn music was played and a volley of shots rang out over his coffin as he was laid to rest and the town fell quiet.  Journey’s end for a man of the town and a champion in the cause of peace in which he gave his life.

Death March (Saul) Handel

Days and Moments

Days and moments quickly flying
Blend the living with the dead;
Soon our bodies will be lying
Each within its narrow bed.

Soon our souls to God Who gave them
Will have sped their rapid flight:
Able now by grace to save them,
O that, while we can, we might!

Jesus, infinite Redeemer,
Maker of this mighty frame,
Teach, O teach us to remember
What we are, and whence we came.

Whence we came and whither wending,
Soon we must through darkness go,
To inherit bliss unending,
Or eternity of woe.

Jesus, merciful Redeemer,
Rouse dead souls to hear Thy voice;
Wake, O wake each idle dreamer
Now to make the eternal choice.

As a shadow, life is fleeting;
As a vapor so it flies;
For the old year now retreating
Pardon grant, and make us wise;

Wise that we our days may number,
Strive and wrestle with our sin,
Say not in our work, nor slumber
Till Thy glorious rest we win.

Soon before the Judge all glorious
We with all the dead shall stand:
Savior, over death victorious,
Place us then on Thy right hand.

St Stephen’s Day

I went to bed at Aussie lunchtime woke up to find we had retained the ashes!!. Oh yes we have.

Boxing Day or rather St Stephen’s Day, holiday mood still in full swing. Panto on Christmas Eve and now today the annual Bakers and Sweeps football match in Waltham Cross. Been going since 1908 to raise money for charity. Soot and flour everywhere, the poor Mayor got well and truly sooted and caked.  At least I was a game mayor. See it on Facebook or comment, blog, or chat on Twitter;

www.twitter.com/whitstableboy

Good turnout and good fun for all. Lots of money raised for good causes directed towards older people. Well done you Bakers and Sweeps, I think the final score was 4-4, but, I could be wrong.

Christmas Day, Merry Christmas.

Article Image

Christmas Day, Merry Christmas. Went to see my daughters rescue dog, ‘Scruffy’. Good journey no snow!!. G/daughter could not go because of chickenpox, shame, but ,the drive was too far. Lovely Christmas Day spread really pushed the boat out. Drove back late, very foggy, got back in time for the start of the Aussie team trashing in the fourth test in Melbourne (that’s Australia not the one near Cambridge).

24 12 2010 (Christmas Eve)

In office early, last minute shopping then off to the panto, ‘oh yes I am’.

23 12 2010

Out to Hoddesdon to open a new quick service shop and off licence in the town centre. Always good to see a new business opening. Lots of excited people, lots of cakes and lots of photos. Nice morning, cut the ribbon and said a few words. Good luck to the business.

Bumped into a long time friend who I had not seen for nearly 5 years, normally spends most of his time in Spain. Went for coffee and chatted about olden times and found Memory Lane. Hope to see him for New Year.

Office to sort out a few things then to Emmanuel Lodge to have tea with the residents and hand out next year’s calendars. Good company, good fun, lots of issues discussed with the residents. Saw a young lady who has promised to jump out of an aeroplane for the Mayor’s Charity. ‘teens unite’. Details will be sorted out next year and I shall introduce her to the charity. I met her a few week ago at a party for adults with learning difficulties. Really impressed with her keeness, will do all I can for her effort.

22 12 2010

Lunch date off due to complications on the weather front. Not to worry took the LM to lunch. Office afternoon for letters etc.

Out in the evening to the Zumba Dance Christmas Party at Wolsey Hall. Drew the raffle and collected a fantastic amount for the Mayor’s Charity, ‘teens unite’.  A really great bunch of people, love them all. Promised Nicki I shall be back. Keep working gals.

21 12 2010

Your chance to have your say in the guestbook comment link at the side of this page. Leave a comment, message  or ask a question.

To Fourfields Residential Home for their Christmas Party. Lots of fayre and carols. Good chin wag and photos. all round. Father Christmas did not come, probably saving himself for the big day.

Quick turnaround and off the the Valle Academy Christmas Party. Met Father Christmas, so that’s why he was not at Fourfields, had to be a reason. Lots of dance and good cheer. Christmas is only just round the corner and there are some very excited children. Enjoyed my first visit to Valle, very impressed in what they do in the community for young people. Will come back.

Late political meeting at the council sorted out some issues. Hear some news about a colleague. Stopped for a chat, home late, again!!.

20 12 2010

Office for a couple of meetings. Receive a call that both have had to be cancelled because of the snow. Then receive a call that my official function at Haileybury School for the nightime carol concert has also fallen foul of the weather. Have coffee with the leader and natter for ages, various topics, a good discussion.

Pick up LM then home before returning in the afternoon to tidy up files. Speak to leisure and Cllr. Seeby pops in for coffee and a natter, a nattering sort of day.

Back in the evening, I can now attend the constitutional meeting. Issues resolved and a theme developed lots more to do. Cllr. Lewis extremely generous and adds to the Rosedale carol service collection.

Home for emails and then out for Christmas Shopping, well the LM.

19 12 2010

Attending the Christmas Carol service at the Rosedale Free Church, my 7th visit to the ward. Starts at 6pm, do not be late to secure the best seat it will most certainly be standing room only.

Despite the snow a really good turn out, well organised, Janet has it well in hand, and a lovely evening of festive fayre. Lots of VIP’s and a chance to catch up. Met a number of the worshippers and joined in the holiday fun.

Spoke to the MP about teens unite, network with the pastor’s wife and I will visit their youth club in the early part of 2011. Corrected a mislead, as mayor I am the youngest elected for nearly 13 years and probably the youngest Mayor in terms of years on the council to have been elected Mayor (4).

Charity raised a staggering amount of which I am exceedingly grateful. Home in the snow with pressie and mince pie. Merry Christmas.

18 12 2010

The impending snow has arrived and now snowed in must be hundreds of feet deep!!, well something like that. Too cold and snowy to venture far, Christmas is certainly around the corner.

17 12 210

Office engaged to go over appointments, catch up on Christmas cards etc. very cold. Out later to the Hoddesdon Conservative Club to meet a group of Italians and two MP’s over from Italy. Snow and bad weather prevented their arrival, but, not to worry good attendance considering the cold and impending snow.

Made a speech, interrupted by a colleague who was clearly not listenting, carried on and well received. Home in the cold.

16 12 2010

Very tired after my dancing, office in the early afternoon to catch up with letters and post. Arrange a couple of meetings for Monday.

15 12 2010

To the Rosedale Community Centre for lunch with the over 50′s, this is my 6th visit as Mayor to the Rosedale Ward. Richly entertained with carols from Andrews Lane School, lots of good food and very good company, traditional Christmas dinner, reminds me of that episode from the Vicar of Dibley at Christmas!!.

Short speeches made with jokes, my jokes won the day. Communual carol singing and readings, nice afternoon, over ran and left late.

Office engaged re, paperwork. Home to get ready for my charity Zumba dancing. I have never been in a room with 150 fit women. Very fast and energy sapping, but I was a good Mayor and lasted the course, 1 hour and 5 minutes, shattered at the end but survived to tell the tale. Another first, the first serving Mayor to complete a session, unless someone knows different?. Bring it on!!.

14 12 2010

Off to the Panto at the Civic, oh yes I did. considering it was so early in the morning it was a great show. Lots of school children enjoying the morning.  Chance to talk with some of the schools and a photograph taken handing over the cheque in aid of the school charities.

Council Christmas night in Hoddesdon, spend locally I say. A very good night, good food, good entertainment and good company. Beats the old affair of veggie burger and chips in the council offices. Merry Christmas to all.

13 12 2010

Very busy day and a certain amount of tedium crept in. Off to Hoddesdon for the official opening of a new social housing complex. Made a short tailored speech and chatted to some of the residents. The flats are certainly the flagship of Broxbourne Housing Association who are doing so much for our borough.

Quick turnaround to the Greenfield Centre in Waltham Cross to open some new classrooms. Not met and wandered around, bumped into RG who showed me the way in. Lots of people, after chats, introductions and orange juice  I mistakenly  said to the organiser, ‘when do you want me to cut the ribbon’, ‘no its OK’, came the reply, ‘the Chair of Governors is doing it’. OK, stayed and chatted then back to office.

Afternoon appointment, I become the ‘Wizard of Oz’, lots of people make appointments to see me at the end of the yellow brick road to ask for help. I listen to the problem and said I would see what I could do, no promises.

I have another problem, someone has been in my office. I make enqs. apparently there was 20 in my office on Friday when I was out. I ask my outer office about it and they no nothing. I ask to see the Head of MS he was not aware of anything and will investigate. I have to say I am not happy.

Financial problems enter my busy day, I receive a bill for the mayor’s debate day and money is needed up front for the gala day. Oh dear Mr Porter.

To St Mary’s Church for the evening carol concert of four schools. Lovely evening of words and music. Funny act by the vicar, thrills and spills. Stayed behind and had a long chat with the head of Hailey Hall School.

Met two charming children (I have met them before), and engage in conversation with them and their parents. The children are very polite and respectful, they sang in the choir and have voices like angels. They are a credit to their family, school and most certainly to themselves and for young people. I am sure Father Christmas will visit them and leave plenty of pressies.

Home late, long day.

12 11 2010

No engagements just a lot of catching up to do with my post and emails. Saw Spurs on the TV draw with Chelsea.

11 12 2010

All about timing today lots on and lots to do. Up to Dahlia Close for the unveiling and re-dedication service of the street name replacing the original recently vandalised. Lots on parade and ship’s company assembled. Beautiful sunny winter’s day, not cold.

I make a short speech before unveiling the new sign. Thanked those attending, chatted to some of the RN ship mates and a former mayor who had presided over the original opening and dedication nearly 13 years ago.

Later in the day I am at the Masonic Hall for the annual dedication of the ‘Lights of Love’, for those who have lost loved ones to cancer. Moving service with carols and tears. I  make a speech, later the vicar commended me on my choice of words. Spoke to a number of families and found the chat easy going on such a sombre occasion.

Onto Hoddesdon for the Carnival of Light parade, missed the singers got stuck in the High Street could not move for people stopping and wanting a chat. Lots of nice people and chat. Greeted the procession at its journey’s end. Did not appreciate the lead car with a former mayor hanging out of the window waving to the crowds in royal fashion, not a good idea and rather embarrassing.

To the carnival dance, judged the best court, made another speech and handed out some honorary,  ‘I have met the Mayor certificates’ to visiting children. Really good, grand affair, lots of hard work and effort by so many which ought to be applauded. All the fun of the carnival, took me back to my youth when I used to to take part in Whitstable Carnival and even dated a Miss Whitstable!!, ahh, halcyon days of summer.

10 12 2010

Busy day, out to Hoddesdon Town centre to hear the choir and singers of John Warner School and Broxbourne Primary School entertaining the shoppers with Christmas songs. Spoke to both groups after. Met a number of shopkeepers for a chat, mainly talked about business and the run up to the holiday period.

Later to the carol concert at St Augustine’s Church, really good festive evening. Choir, orchestra and lots of Christmas songs, I know them all off by heart. MP present, had photos. taken. Chance to speak to some of the players and chatted about opportunities, bit of networking, orchestra needs gigs, church needs repairs to the roof and I need plenty of help for my charity.

Back to catch up om my emails. Had a response from ‘about my area’ promised to give an interview to the site editor I met at an engagement a couple of days ago, happy to do.  Also had a request from the Broxbourne News to do an interview, again happy to do.

09 12 2010

Up and out early to the White Water Centre in Waltham Cross, for the official handing over of the Olympic site to the Lee Valley by the Princess Royal. Lots of VIP’s arrived. I stood in line with Seb Coe and the Marquis of Salisbury to be presented to the Princess Royal by the Lord Lieutenant, Countess of Verulam. Did my best bow and greetings on behalf of the Borough of Broxbourne.

A good day for the peoples of the borough and for the area of Waltham Cross a proud moment in the history of the borough.

08 12 2010

Office engaged for some updates and then later with the LM to the Marriott Hotel for the annual switching on of the hotel courtyard lights.

Local school and brownies singing carols, jolly cold, with the wind in the courtyard  making it around -8. So cold the LM went and got some hot cheshnuts which we held in our hands and concealed in our pockets to keep warm.

Father Christmas

Father Christmas arrived, chatted to parents and children. Later stayed for a meal. Home late. Lights, carols and FC all good company.

07 12 2010

To Stevenage for county council seminar on education. Early start but grid locked around Flamstead End, I have to double back and go through the country lanes to join the A10 at Hoddesdon. Thick frost so not so good under foot. Arrive in time, good day very informative.

Evening training session on planning then onto full planning and licensing committee meeting. Long meeting. Home late, very cold.

06 12 2010

Toy Service at St Mary’s Church for the Cheshunt Brownies and Guides. Lots of carols and toys for children less fortunate. Met most of the children some I knew from Churchfields School. Cold evening, really nice service. I have promised that I will try and look in at their Christmas Fayre next week. Tight schedule but will do my best.

On to the council for a meeting on localism, some dry but interesting stuff. Felt like a county council meeting. Still very cold, left late. Good to be home and now to watch some cricket. Come on England.

-20C warning as snow chaos spreads ...

05 12 2010

04 12 2010

Busy time ahead on a day in which the snow and ice have gone to be replaced by freezing rain. In good time for Paradise Park and the annual Christmas Party for children who have lost a parent through cancer. Lots of children and parents, speak with many from the Broxbourne area. Entertained with food, song and dance and join in the festive feast before heading off in a limo for a ride to see Santa Claus.

Have to leave with lots of goodbyes to head for Hoddesdon and attend the annual Christmas Party for adults with learning difficulties. Meet some old friends from the ‘Tuesday Club’ and have a great time chatting. Lots of festive fayre and music, everyone having a lovely time.

Have to leave to attend the Lowewood Museum to open the Doubled Glazed exhibition on craft work. Stay and make a speech and enjoy a glass of orange juice before heading back to the adults Christmas Party. Stay late, leave late.

03 12 2010

Waltham Cross for the start of the Christmas carol concerts by schools in the borough, first up was Holy Trinity from WX. Got recognised walking through the market and stopped to talk to traders. Heard a series of misgivings.

Inside the pavillion had trouble in locating where the school were, found them outside a unit undergoing refurbishment away from Santa’s grotto, apparently, one of the shop units at the original place was complaining about the crowds and people could not get in their shop. Charles Dickens would have had a field day, such a shame.

Holy Trinity were brilliant, lots of chat and photos. taken.  Had a chance to say a few words and spoke with parents, shoppers and the teachers.

Back to the office to make final preparations for the visit of a special guest and his parents. Had a chance to natter to the leader on various issues did not agree on one. Guest arrived with his mum and dad and a lovely afternoon followed. Lots of chat and questions. Presents handed over and photo. taken.

Spoke to various officers during the remainder of the afternoon before setting off quite late. Busy day ahead tomorrow.

02 12 2010

Office engaged re. meetings. Out later to the Civic Awards at the Civic Hall. Excellent night, met many of the volunteers who make up our community sector, all true friends and soldiers without uniform doing good work on behalf of so many.

Entertainment good and everyone seemed to enjoy the night. Worthy award winners and many happy people. There was only so much cake you can eat in one night. Bade farewell to many friends. Cold night.

01 12 2010

Still not a Premium Bond millionaire, just have to keep going. Office late afternoon meeting.

To the Civic Hall with the LM for the annual Borough of Broxbourne carol concert. Singing along with local schools and the spirit of Christmas with the sounds of traditional carols sung by the school choirs of Forres School in Hoddesdon, Amwell View School in Stanstead Abbotts, Sheredes Primary School in Hoddesdon and Simon Balle Secondary School in Hertford.

Joined up with other councillors for an evening that was very special and a treat for all. A wondrous night, and well done to all those who made this possible and the children themselves. Stayed behind and chatted to many of them with their proud parents.

30 11 2010

Office engaged re. meeting for engagements during December.

Combined meeting with Community and SO Board Committees.

Out to HRC for the ‘Tuesday Club’, a group providing activities for adults with learning difficulties. What a pleasure a really nice time, got thrashed at Wii ten pin bowling. Chatted had coffee and made new friends.

The group are planning for their panto in the New Year. They have also put forward an idea to raise money for the Mayor’s Charity. This will culminate with a grand raffle in February. What can you say, so proud they are in our borough and have been for 35 years.

29 11 2010

Office for paperwork, letter and just sorting.

28 11 2010

Day off and no engagements, chance to catch up on my letters and reports. Yes!!.

27 11 2010

I was asked to switch on the Christmas Lights, I said, yes okay no problem, Oxford Street or Regents Street, Waltham Cross Mr Mayor!.

Off I went, to the Pavillion, what a lovely time, met old and new people, lots of children waiting for Father Christmas. The countdown began and the lights lit up the hall. What a brilliant sight and a joy to many. Deck the halls.

26 11 2010

A cold miserable Friday, office, long meet with the leader then another meet with head of member services, oh dear what can the matter be!.

Freezing cold off to Wolsey Hall, get the Brut out and the glad rags on its X-Plosion time. 270 youngsters out on a gig. Teens Unite in evidence holding the crowds at bay. Lots of raffle prizes, sending out the message and raising the profile and awareness of the charity.

Leave late to Hoddesdon to pop into the Con Club. for the 80th birthday celebration for Joyce Ball, ex Mayor. Song and dance in full swing. Chat and leave late, home even later, very cold. Christmas snow on the way.

25 11 2010

Early breakfast meeting cancelled but still off to BHA for an official visit. Tour the offices and meet the chair of the board and senior officials. Chat to staff and gain a good insight into their work. Meet with the SMT and the Residents Forum. BHA are such an important part of this community and to the local council.

Lunch and then to my office to greet a super star and award him a certificate for his work in the community for young carers. Meet with his family and younger sibling. Stayed late to chat and answer lots of questions.

Later, out to a community meeting at Goffs Oak for GOWEST part of the bi-annual community meeting to sort out problems.

Home very late and tired.

24 11 2010

Education appeals chair at Stevenage, busy day ahead. Hot foot back to Cheshunt to go to Fishpools for the opening of their newly refurbished assessories department. Met the MD and Head of Creative. Tour around, met lots of the public and staff. Fishpools are a mayor player in WX and have been so for over 100 years. The whole of the area is a footfall magnet for the town.

They could not have been more supportive or charming in their approach. I really enjoyed this visit and I am sure there is much more we can do together in partnership to secure much with them. Overshot my time, only because there was so much to see and discuss and meet such nice staff and customers.

The store is one of the biggest in the SE and has been a family business for 110 years since Ernest Fishpool bought the first shop with a loan of £85, wow look at it now.  I am so proud as Mayor that they are in our borough and hope they stay another 100 years. I really do applaud and laud the effort Fishpools has made to our borough and to WX town, which does not go unnoticed or appreciated.

Made a wondrous gesture and presented a substantial cheque for the charity ‘teens unite’.  The work is by no means over, there is a great deal to do but it will go a long way in making a difference to the lives of some very special young people.

23 11 2010

Fairfields School Council at the offices for a visit to the council chamber for a presentation on environmental issues. Later I hold a debate on, ‘Does Broxbourne like Snow’. After a lively debate and some really good points the vote was overwhelmingly yes, with only 2 against.

Then to my office for questions to the mayor, orange juice and biscuits. lots of questions, chat and photos. A really good morning, very well behaved children. Top brass of the school turned out, the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and the Chair of Governors.

Sad to hear the Headteacher is retiring next year that is a blow to this community. He has been in charge of the school for a number of years and has achieved three outstanding reports.

Later, to Wormley playing fields for the Police and partnership 5 a side football tournament. very cold. Not many up for it a rather subdued turnout. Had photos. taken with the winners, a youth team from Cheshunt beating BHA in the final.

22 11 2010

Office engaged to catch up on paper work. Later preparing for the evening meeting of the constitutional panel for further discussions on the new set up for the council and boundary commission proposals. All out for public consultation.

First day of my PA away for a short period, about 2 weeks. New arrangements in place, some teething trouble on letters and making sure details are in place for visits etc.

21 11 2010

With LM to St Albans for the High Sheriff’s Justice Service at St Albans Cathedral, all pomp and circumstance. Processed through the Cathedral in solemn movement to the fanfare of four trumpets and organ. Judges galore from all the courts, The High Court, The Lord Justice of Appeal, Chief Constable, hope my car not on a yellow line, I’ve got no chance, ‘ Guide me O thou great redeemer’.

20 11 2010

Busy  day, first up to Cuffley for Goffs Oak Guides and Brownies members annual Christmas Fayre. Tried my hand at the hoops and getting the counters into the hole, not very good at either. Chatted to a number of people, had a cup of coffee and spent a lot of money. Bumped into the new vicar, must arrange a visit.

Off to Hertford to meet with the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor of Hertford and Lord Salisbury for lunch.  Then a photo. shoot at  Guy and Toni of Hertford at their shop, to say thank you for the fantastic work they have done with my charity, teens unite, in helping out with some very special children.

Home to change then to Ware with the LM to see the annual show of Ware Brass Band in a cowboy western theme, Ye ha, with the Mayor of Ware and the Deputy Mayor of Hertford. Won first prize in the raffle, a dream world cruise for two on the QE11, no a bottle of champers, oh well.

19 11 2010

In at the office late afternoon to sort out a number of week-end engagements and other matters.

Race Night at the Conservative Club, stop off to collect a few things and drop off tickets. Bit of a confusion at the start as to who was doing the tote, oh dear not a good beginning.

Lots of races, lots of money being placed on horses, lots of food and lots of support. Teens Unite present along with well wishers in the shape of the MP, Brian Perry, Chris Mitchell and many others. Really fun evening and a whopping £500 raised. Well done to Alan Searing, Keith Brown and many others. Could not have done it without them.

I have said before but it is well worth repeating, I really do applaud and laud the effort made, which does not go unnoticed or appreciated.  The work is by no means over, there is a great deal to do but it will go a long way in making a difference to the lives of some very special young people.

18 11 2010

Special day, invitation to the Isabel Hospice at WGC. Met by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and toured the day centre, meeting patients, voluntary workers and medical staff. Had tea and cake. Then to the ‘in patients’ centre at the QE2  Hospital, also met with patients, medical staff and families.

The Isabel Hospice ‘family circle’ of wonderful people, it was a very special afternoon and I enjoyed the time in the company of them all.

I am excited and enthused at the prospect to do all I can in my mayoral year to profile all sections of the borough community. Those at Isabel Hospice, volunteers, patient’s,  family’s, medical teams and other staff, are all generous of heart and kind of spirit, jewels in the crown of an extended family for our borough and very special people. Wherever I go I will hold them dear in my heart.

Moving journey on the clinical side as I chatted to patients and family. A sad place but not a depressing one, people of remarkable courage and resillience, God’s special people. I wish them all my heartfelt love and comfort. God bless and my grateful thanks as Mayor of Broxbourne to all those who I met and contributed not only to the afternoon, but, to the community cause of care.

I heard and saw how many work very hard for the lives of those in their caring hands; “this shall be better than light and safer than a known way”. I congratulated them all on their efforts within the family circle and recognise the good they do for the community, which, does not go unnoticed or appreciated by the people of our borough and within the wider community of the county.

I wished their work well and thanked them for what they have done, for what they do and for what they continue to do. Without their presence we would all be the poorer.

‘There is not room for death, nor atom that his might could render void; thou art being and breath, and what thou art may never be destroyed’

17 11 2010

Office for much of the time doing bits and bobs and sorting.

Later, to Hoddesdon to the Civic Centre for the Bi-annual Floral Society Flower arranging show. One of only two men in the audience, fascinating art of Christmas flower arranging. It was billed as ‘Santa Claus is coming to Town’, I think it ought to have been Mother Christmas. Very clever stuff, I know what to do when I get home.

16 11 2010

Office engaged re. meetings.  Out to Cheshunt Sailing base for tour with the crucial crew, organised by Herts. Constab. for all the primary schools in the borough. A series of 7 workshops, water safety, peer pressure, fire safety and a number of other important issues that young people face. Really good afternoon, lots of excited children and hard working helpers, good day all round.

Office, then onto council meeting of the SO Board. Home late.

15 11 2010

A evening spent with the George Fuller Club for the Blind. The entertainment provided by the Salvation Army. A mixture of music and readings with some Christmas carol requests. Met the would be new secretary, a young French girl called Gladys. Left in freezing fog.

Remembrance Sunday

Attended with the LM, laid a wreath of poppies in remembrance on behalf of the peoples of the Borough of Broxbourne.

We as a nation pay homage to our dead of 2 World Wars and conflicts since. We also remember those in harms way in Afghanistan, and those who have and are suffering as a consequence of war, in limb, mind and tears.

In the Borough of Broxbourne we remember our war dead. Private Uglow of Goffs Oak Parish joined up in August 1914, answering the call to serve King, Country and Community. In November he was in France, six weeks later on the 1st January 1915, he was killed at the first battle of Ypres in Flanders Fields where the poppies blow.

His name lives on in his inscription on the Menin Gate, on the War Memorial at Goffs Oak and in St James Church, Goffs Oak. He has no known grave. He was 17 years old.

“Have you news of my boy Jack?”
Not this tide.
“When d’you think that he’ll come back?”
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Has any one else had word of him?”
Not this tide.
For what is sunk will hardly swim,
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?”
None this tide,
Nor any tide,
Except he did not shame his kind —
Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.

Then hold your head up all the more,
This tide,
And every tide;
Because he was the son you bore,
And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

For all our ‘Jacks’.

13 11 2010

Feeling a lot better today, must make the Lowewood Museum for the launch of the newest local history book on Hoddesdon and Broxbourne in pictures. Really touched by a personal gift to me of the book signed by the authors.

Made a short speech talked about the history and heritage of the Borough thanked those present who work so hard to preserve it. Bought a calendar for a Christmas gift. Chatted to people and had a good interesting talk with Shelia.

12 11 2010

Quiet day recovering from the quiz night. Not feeling very well, heavy cold aches and sore throat, probably man flu as the LM would say. In the office to catch up with some paperwork.

ARMISTICE DAY

A biodegradable poppy, right, and a traditional poppy. | Paul Darrow for The Globe and Mail

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the guns fell silent and the fighting stopped. We as a nation remember our war dead of two world wars and conflicts since. We honour and remember those who have died and still fighting in a foreign field in Afghanistan. We remember all those who have and are suffering as a consequence of war in mind, body and tears.

We stand at the eleventh hour in two minutes silence and remember.

Later in the evening to Waltham Cross Conservative Club for a quiz night in aid of my charity, teens unite fighting cancer. First time they have held a quiz. Very successful evening, really good fun and enjoyed by all those who took part and joined in.

Cody the quizmaster weaved his magic and charm and made the night. What a find, a Canadian living in England and embracing us all. A real gem and a star, I shall call him Canadian Cody, hope he does not mind. A master at his art of entertaining us all during the quiz. Well done.  A well done also, to all those who took part and supported the charity so well, over a £100 was raised.

I do appreciate every penny that comes in and will ensure it provides tangible support for youngsters with cancer and life limiting illnesses. I shall do all I can to profile their cause within the borough, raise awareness and obtain as much funds as possible during the course of my mayoral year.

I really do applaud and laud the effort made, which does not go unnoticed or appreciated.  The work is by no means over, there is a great deal to do but it will go a long way in making a difference to the lives of some very special young people.

10 11 2010

To Halfhide Lane traveller site for an official visit, honouring a promise I made when I was elected Mayor to visit all sections of the community.   I am Probably the first mayor ever to officially visit a traveller site either in Broxbourne or the County.

A beautiful blue sky, crisp day with glorious sunshine on the winter air. Very well received although a little tentative at first, barriers soon broken. It was a lovely and very special afternoon and I enjoyed my time in the company of them all. Had tea, and met the family and neighbours, the children were extremely nice, polite, conversational and very well mannered.

I know that many work hard for the cause of our community and they are to be congratulated and the good work recognised.  I am very excited and enthused at the prospect of doing all I can to profile the borough during my mayoral year and celebrate it’s history, culture and heritage. The traveller community are very much part of that. Today was a demonstration of people being of generous heart and kind of spirit.

Later to Wolsey Hall for Zumba Night. What a reception 150 ladies packing the hall for a very hard session. I have come to see what this craze is all about. Made a speech from the stage and they have taken me to their heart. I have promised to return before Christmas to join in with them and they returned the compliment by agreeing to raise money for my charity, teens unite. Yes.  What a class act they are.

09 11 2010

It is that time of year again so get down to Waltham Cross Conservative Club on Thursday 11th November 2010 at 7pm, for a rocking Quiz Night in aid of the Mayor’s Charity, ‘teens unite’ fighting cancer. Contact me or Paul Seeby for details. Pay at the door only £1, lots of raffle prizes. A NIGHT NOT TO MISS.

To the A10 for the opening of the bridge across the road linking the Waltham Cross side to Bury Green  and St Mary’s School. Named in the memory of Paul Cully for all that he did.

To Waltham Cross for the opening of a new restaurant called ‘Ocean’. Lots of balloons and chips. Photos. and meet the staff. A really classy place for a good night out. No expense spared on the decor or the equipment. It will do good, lovely co-owner and family. Lots turned up to see the business start well. I made a speech and wished it well. Well done, must make a booking.

To office for a meeting and then photo. shoot for the handover of the painting by a local artist, commissioned by me in the summer to support local artists. I really like it, it is beautiful a lovely, stunning picture of St Augustine’s Church, Broxbourne, so pleased.

Carried on with meeting, then home to change ready for Planning Meeting tonight. Long agenda and drawn out. Home late, very cold.

08 11 2010

Office to catch up on my week end letters and calls, and to sort out my bits and pieces. Lots to do little time to do it. Miserable day absolutely wet and windy.

07 11 2010

Bright sunny day all looks well for the fireworks tonight, rain for much later in the evening.  First though to the Beaufort concert to listen to the chamber music of Quintaero. What a pleasant and beautiful afternoon, so right before hitting the firework trail. Had to leave early in order to avoid the road closures.

Cold afternoon and an even colder night, thousands making there way to the park for the festival of fireworks. In the golf club making myself useful, welcome to all the disabled group and the children. Avoid the great slabs of cake, oh where are the sandwiches. Usual gremlins present.

Quite a crowd building, Gillian Talyforth sets off the bonfire before we then all make our way to the start of the firework display. Short speech then the countdown, wow what an event the night sky lit up by the unending shower of light. A display worthy of the borough. Well done to so many.

06 11 2010

Time for tea. Out to Fourfields Home for the elderly to celebrate their new tea bar. Lots of cakes on display and plenty of tea. Met and spoke with many of the staff and residents. Some very touching stories of effort, sacrifice and courage. There are gold nuggets in this borough and some of them were here today.

Civic awards night at Stevenage. Most notably that of Dr Woo who was killed whilst on humanitarian medical aid in Afghanistan. A daughter of Stevenage and a heroine of Hertfordshire. We all pay her a great honour for her courage and the sacrifice in the pursuit of assistance to others.

Pleasant evening, nice food, good company and a touch of Brian Rix to the evening. Some danced the night away I was the last Mayor standing. Home in foggy and cold weather.

05 11 2010

Out to Broxbourne railway station for a bit of train spotting for the new works commencing on a multi million pound investment to the car park, part of a much bigger investment to the network on station and rolling stock. Met all the top people. Donned my health and safety gear, made a speech and turned over some of the gravel being used in the works.

This is without doubt a significant investment to the borough and the railway infrastructure, which, is good news to commuters and good news to the people of Broxbourne.

Back to office for tidy up and catch up. Then to teens unite HQ for meeting to tidy up and catch up.

Doing good work in the field of those out of work and referred after 6 months. Will try and find additional outlets. lively and friendly meeting extended well beyond our time. Such really nice people cannot help but enthuse on what they do. Photo. taken. Will meet again.

This is National Youth Week and off to Hatfield to celebrate all that is good in our young people not only in our borough but across Herts. Lively seminar type conference. Meet young people from Letchworth doing their DOE silver. photo taken. Met the Broxbourne youngsters doing good work on restoring bicycles and Stevenage youngsters working on a play in which they invite to their Christmas production. Photo taken. Fantastic night, left feeling that young people do good.

Fairly early start to Cuffley for the Christmas card sale of the Goffs Oak branch of Save the Children Fund. Met by Kath, lovely, warm lady. Tour the hall speak to the Vicar from Goffs Oak and later met the new Vicar for Cuffley, both charming ladies. Met a number of equally charming ladies and all had a natter.

Firework night at St Catherine’s School, Hoddesdon. What a grand and large affair, fairground, stalls, eats and a beer tent!. Gigantic firework display a lot of organising and hard work by many. Led the countdown, hundreds cheered the night sky as it was lit up by a barrage of light and spectacular fire. Gosh how the crowd loved it. Well done to all those who made this possible, the hard work and considerable amount of effort certainly paid off.

02 11 2010

In the office catching up on letters etc. No engagements just a chance to relax, busy schedule ahead for later in the week.

01 11 2010

To Fairfields School to address the school assembly. Then to see Year 5 and the Council Council, to speak with them on the role of the Mayor. Lively affair some very good questions and lots of interest and discussion. A really well behaved group of children, polite, well mannered and interested, a credit to the school and themselves. Well done.

Had coffee with the staff and then presented with a cheque for £100 raised during a coffee morning on behalf of my charity teens unite, what a pleasant surprise, really touched by their kindness.

Off to Cheshunt Park to meet the new 5 year contractors for the golf course, Gavin Jones. Lots of new equipment and happy staff to show them off. Photo. opportunity and chat with Simon one of the regional directors. Lovely day and the golf course looked an absolute picture in the Autumn sunshine.

31 10 2010

Halloween Night and the pumpkins are ready

autumn_011_01_tnb.png 60.4K

Halloween Night and all scary, lots of vampires and witches abound all round the area so I will have to watch my step, cannot chance being sucked in. Brave the night goings on and travel with the LM over to Hoddesdon for the annual Italian Dinner, all the top flight are present. Clapped to my table said grace and sat down to a gigantic meal spread over 3 and half hours, my goodness what a feast.

Made a speech from the stage and drew the raffle. Lots of opportunity to network but kept it to a bare minimum. Dance and music to savour the warm of the night. Spirited away on my broom late, too late for Match of the Day 2, never mind.

30 10 2010

Make a difference day at Cedars Park, arrive latish met some of the crew, short on numbers. Helped out on the over growing ivy along the boundary wall. Spoke to the MP and other helpers. Into the cafe for a quick sausage roll and orange juice before home to change and off up to the Halloween afternoon for the older people of the borough.

Party in full swing when I arrive lots of horrors on show, donned a wig and witches hat, neither really suited I was more scary without it. Lots of food and cakes, bumped into some old friends and took the opportunity to catch up on the news and more importantly the gossip. Not able to stay for the raffle as I had to get home, shower and get my tux on for a black tie evening event. Still onto my broom for the the flight home, its magic you know!.

Masonic Hall for the annual dinner to celebrate Trafalgar Day. Posh affair, big guests and lovely crew on board, Lord Nelson himself would have been proud. All those present have done their duty. Traditional roast beef  dinner, served in the officers mess by an all female crew. Loyal Toast made with due dignity, port in plenty of supply.

Mess rules applied, nobody had to walk the plank but it would not mattered because the ship was well and truly anchored in dock. Nice speech by the Provost Marshall from Haileybury, I replied and lots of nice words said by many of the ship’s company.

A really splendid evening with good shipmates on board, a surprise name tag raffle with the proceeds going to the Mayor’s Charity, shiver my timbers what a wondrous gesture.

Time to go and get piped off, up the gangway I travel, steady as she goes, lucky I do not drink. Steer a course for home a fair wind is blowing, all I ask for is a tall ship and a star to guide me by. So long sailors, brilliant night.

29 10 2010

Office meeting with V-Inspired, discussion on volunteers for this area and the need to get more on board. V-Inspired are one of the lead in this area. Useful meeting. Agreed to support and  meet with new volunteers and host a presentation. Ideas discussed regarding host for conference for newly formed group representing LGBT group.

Later in the day over to Ware for the concert for the fallen. Met up with the VC of East Herts. and the Chairman of HCC. Found myself talking to a young man whom I believe to be a victim of the current engagement in Afghanistan. Did not take me long to realise that he appeared worse the wear for alcohol and used some colourful language, a gatecrasher. Security breached which was not good and he was tumbled.

Missed out on anything to eat, it had been a long day and I was expecting some food. Found out that a number of other mayors had been at the Roebuck Hotel in Ware, where the food was, for a reception prior to the event. The Mayor of Broxbourne had not been invited to that part, so, less than impressed. The concert finished at 10pm and and long day had ended without any food.

View the photographs, just click below;

picasaweb.google.co.uk/CountyCouncillorDaveHewitt

Excellent weather, fayre and company, hottest day of the year. Met some good connections. Had plenty of invites to events and a nice compliment from table tennis boss. Think I have spotted likely candidates for Mayor’s Cadet.

A really nice day, thanks to everyone who attended.

England lost 4-1 to Germany in the 2nd round of the Football World Cup. Oh well roll on 2014, 40th anniversary of the formation of the borough. Now would it not be nice to win the World Cup then.

28 06 2010

Attended ‘Get on at Broxbourne’ presentation, celebrating success of staff students in learning. Good speech by the leader followed by the principal of Herts. Regional College. A fresh wind blowing.

Caught up with some briefings on outstanding issues, very useful. Informed I had won a prize at St Andrews School Fete, yes.

Site visit to Lowewood Museum with community safety officer under the community payback banner, positive outcome.

Attended the AGM of the County Scout Association. Extremely hot, stuffy venue unduly long and uncomfortable meeting, the heat of the day had certainly settled in that room.

Disappointed at lack of involvement, award winners from Broxbourne (E.Herts. Scouts), one a Queens Scout award. Broxbourne at the forefront of embracing the call, following on from the County Commissioner’s challenge at last year’s AGM.

Since then, 20k match funding, centenary exhibition for nearly 3 months at our museum, positive co-operation to recruit 250 additional members and leaders. Ongoing movement for new facilities in the West of the Borough.

The first time in the history of the council both under the old urban district and since the re-organisation of local government in 1974, that a community group has made a presentation to the full council. The East Herts. Scouts did just that last year to the full council at Broxbourne.

Positive factors of the partnership approach with the scout association, and expecting it to be recognised. A Mayor ought not to be a window dressing. I shall invite the Broxbourne scout award recipients to my Parlour.

The ‘chain gang’ is a term of endearment for Mayor’s in the county during their year in office, similar to an affectionate name used in families and very close friends. It ought not to be used or cited by those outside the circle, so be careful.

A very hot day comes to an end.

29 06 2010

Meeting with Revd. Selby, my Chaplain, to discuss the prayers for the full council meeting on the 27th July 2010. Timings will be altered for attendance should prayers be required for the Alderman meeting.

Further discussion on the Civic Service in October on theme, music and prayers, it was agreed I shall send her a draft. Excellent meeting, chatty and informal a really nice person. We are very lucky to have her in the parish.

Meeting with my support PA. New invitations to visit to go over. I have accepted all save one from the Tolmers Scout site management team who want me to make an official visit. I have not accepted at this time I shall sleep on it.

Checked my arrangements up to Friday, meeting with the Director of Community Services 4pm that day.

Completed my letters from the last few days engagements, up to date but more to do. The Showman’s Guild have written to me congratulating me on my appointment and raising the question of a street fair under charter rights dating back to 1253. I was not the Mayor then so will need a briefing.

Attended Finance and Personnel in the evening.

Another long hot day comes to an end.

30 06 2010

Meeting to check diary and invitations. Accepted the Tolmers invitation, signed some letters. Met with assistant Director of Community Services re. Charter Rights Fair for October in Hoddesdon and discussion about Lowewood Museum. Met later with Director of Community Services.

Met with two children from Roselands School. Had pepsi cola, cake and biscuits. Asked lots of questions about the Mayor role. Photographs taken and gifts given to them. A very enjoyable afternoon.

Another hot day.

01 07 2010

Bad start to the day, did not win the million pound premium bond draw for July.

Had lunch and a good meeting with colleagues to catch up with internal and external happenings. Met some head teachers. Later, bumped into the press officer for EH Scouts, useful chat.

Checked my emails, one caught the eye, on my desk are 170 certificates each have to be signed by me by Wednesday, and I must leave the church fete at Cheshunt in good time so I can meet with all 80 exhibitors at the Open Day before the end.

If I give each 3 minutes that is 240 minutes which equals 4 hours. The weather forecast is 29 degrees.

Another hot day, since becoming Mayor I have had almost continual heat waves, useful sign, should end in May 2011.

02 07 2010

Went to St Mary’s School, the first official dignitary to do so. Had an informal tour of the school with the Headteacher. Very impressed with the building, equally impressed with the children, extremely keen to show off their new home. Very polite, respectful and well mannered. A lot of hard work has gone into making the transition from the old site to the new.

Excellent company with the Headteacher, charmingly determined and a driving force for the school to do well, I think we can do business. I believe the school is in good hands and will be a beacon of excellence in the community for our young people.

I have promised to do all I can to champion the school and the young children. I shall pay an official visit to a school event soon.

Visit to Holy Trinity School, a gem in the jewel of good schools in our borough. Lovely children, conversational, polite and extremely well mannered.

Spoke to the whole school and later to year 6. Presented an award to a pupil for her idea for the pre school. Received a cheque from the pupils for their wonderful efforts for the Mayor’s charity in running a junior apprentice event. Cooking, marketing and selling flapjacks.

I am really very proud of them. Well done to the whole school. Photos taken with the children.

Met ‘Team Tesco’, who were doing voluntary work in the school grounds clearing overhanging and growing vegetation. They all work at Tesco HQ. and providing their efforts within the community. They have promised to invite me to their next venture. Glad to go. Photos. taken all round.

Another very hot day comes to an end.

03 07 2010

Open day at the council for the community. Divided my time with the open day of St Mary’s Church. A fascinating insight into our past as a community. An absolute gem and those who did not go missed an incredible experience.

Circulated widely at the borough open day, lots of people enjoying themselves, missed some but to be expected. Met old and new friends. Won on the chance stall for Whitefields Estate Community Group. Turned down a hotdog, far too hot. Lots of photos. and good chat and laughter.

Excellent day, very hot weather. Par for the course in this continuing heat wave.

04 07 2010

Another hot day but the humidity has gone with a fresh so’wester (sounds good) breeze blowing.

No engagements today catching up on my corres. Plenty of letters to write and emails to send. At the Open Day met a mother whose son is due to return from military duty in Germany at the end of July, he will have a short turn around and then be sent to Afganistan. She is very worried and concerned for his safety. I told her that her son is also a son of Broxbourne and we as a community will be concerned for him and, in all our prayers and thoughts.

Those who are in harm’s way and do duty for their country and community will always be remembered for what they do, for what they have done and for what they will continue to do on our behalf.

Before he goes on active service I shall invite him and his mother to visit me in my parlour to properly convey the good wishes of the borough in his duty and thanks for his servivce to us all.

05 07 2010

Phone lines crashed due to an incident in the area affecting hundreds of people. Not able to communicate until today (11/07), when it appears to have been fixed.

Monday, on county duty chairing an education appeals school panel.

Hear the ‘teens unite’ song, go to the Maror’s charity page.

Another hot day.

06 07 2010

Meeting with Head of Arts and Photographic from  Turnford School and two of the 6th Form students. They have been asked to do the Mayor’s official photograph, as the local school winners of the annual photographic competition. Details gone through with borough’s arts development officer. Good meeting, arrangements made for a follow up on the 12/07.

Another hot day.

08 07 2010

Meeting with borough youth development officer.

Met with two children from Cheshunt School for tea and cakes in my parlour. Very good, asked lots of questions. Photos. taken and I gave them a certificate of their visit.

Another very hot day.

09 07 2010

A very hot day. Had meetings in my office .

Left early to attend the Mayor’s Charity Cricket Match against Hoddesdon CC. Very hot late afternoon.

Excellent game, narrowly lost, very good performance by the players from the borough office. Raised on the night from the raffle an incredible £166 which I hope will eventually top £200. Gave a short speech of thanks.

A really good day, special thanks to two ex Mayor’s, who supported the event along with other councillors and members of Broxbourne Borough. My son turned up to lend support.

Mention also to Hoddesdon Cricket Club for hosting the event, a wonderful gesture and very good hosts. I have accepted an invitation to the President’s day and Youth Day at the club towards the end of July.

Thank you all.

10 07 2010

A really hot day, the hottest of the year, in the low/mid 30′s. Up early despite being home late the night before. Off to Hoddesdon Fire Station for their Open Day. Crowded out with people, very friendly, met some lovely people interested in the Mayor. Met some really, really nice Lithuanian peole. Invited to their art group which they hold in the fire station. Spoke about setting up a Lithuanian Group.

Got stickered by the fireman, they have met the Mayor.

Onto the High Street for the Annual Classic Car parade, 170 vehicles and bikes parading. Wow what a sight, hundreds of people in the street, sun shinning, people happy and everyone making trade. Bing, forgot I have got to view all the vehicles to judge the best bike and overall best car.

Nearly two hours later, very hot and sunburnt I have to leave for another enagagement. Picked the winners, and gave an additional prize of best presented car. Oh dear, the organisers forget I go off message there should have been only two prizes, they have got to get another certificate. That’s me.

Quick turnaround, shower and change of clothes and off to County Hall for the Annual Garden Party. Do I not like this, a very hot day.

Stood in queue to be presented with my wife, unbearable heat and stuffy in the long waiting line in the corridor of county hall. Some older guests were escorted to the head of the queue, overcome with heat, others had water given to them. I thought about it but I was a brave Mayor and waited patiently. Once at the head and presented made a quick dash with orange juice in hand to the outside for some fresh air. Dozens of people were crowded under the trees in the shade like some scene from the Sahara, where the animals were all clustered together under a tree to get out of the afternoon sun.

Long chats with familiar faces, talked shop, bumped into our MP, looking very cas. Saw an old friend and had lots of chats. Back inside the horrid heat of the County Suite for a speech. Oh dear.

Dashed back outside to get some fresh air before passing out. left at 5pm for my evening engagement at Goffs Oak.

David Hewitt, I like to think my personal photographer, such a talent, was taking photos. Click on the link below to see his shots.

Home to shower and change again, took advantage of a 20 mins. cat nap, Margaret Thatcher swore by it. Off to the village to the Cheshunt Dramatic Society summer plays and music. Very hot, the heat of the day had gathered in the hall to await my arrival. What a lovely evening, a very talented and well put together show, despite the heat had a very good night. The Mayoress and I went backstage to meet the players, gave a short speech of thanks.

11 07 2010

Another hot day, power back on the phone line so I can use my lap top to catch up with emails, do some letters of thanks, write a speech for my engagement tomorrow at Holdbrook and to catch up with my blog.

Found out that there is a ‘Lets go Play event on at Cedars Park. I have a free day and have not received an invite. This is just the sort of event that I ought to attend under my theme of engaging all the community. Not happy about this.

The heatwave continues.

12 07 2010

Went to Holdbrook Community Centre and opened the new Dementia Cafe. Made a speech and met some of the carers and those utilising the services. An important addition to the community. Will need supporting not just in awareness but financial help. I gave them some advice about funding streams and I will draw their attention to CC Terry Price under the locality budget.

To St Augustine’s Primary to open the new school buildings. Large crowd waiting. Give a speech and cut the ribbon. Blessing of the school and party begins. Really happy atmostphere. Met a number of people from memory lane and had a really good day. Everyone friendly, happy and willing to chat. Left for another engagement at the council office. Felt really good about the afternoon. Dropped off to collect my car then to office.

Met with the borough arts development officer. Had a moan about the ‘Lets go Play’ event. Will look into to find out what went round. Useful discussion on forthcoming arts projects.

Met with art students from Turnford School regarding the Mayor’s photograph. Arrangement made to visit the school on 19/07 to meet with art students and view their work.

A good solid day. Bumped into David Lewis on my out, chatted about Saturday’s car classic day, he was very enthused about it and I agreed.

Another warm, sunny day, humid heat.

13 07 2010

Busy day ahead. To John Warner School for birthday celebration of the opening of the sports centre in union with borough. Lots of people present to share in the joy of the day. Lots of speeches, I made a speech and ate lots of cake, my sort of day. Quite warm and humid. Had an interesting chat to headteacher, David Kennedy, an old education friend about a mayor’s technology challenge next year. Swapped some useful ideas about schools becoming involved. He is going to float the idea at heads conference.

Off to Goffs School to the language club to meet a group of children receiving their end of year awards. Really enjoyed it, practised my French. Gave a speech stressing the importance of learning a language. Lots of photos taken. A very nice afternoon. had a chance to speak with the headteacher who is leaving at the end of term, wished her well and thanked her for her work on behalf of the children.

Back to my office to catch up on my corres. Briefed on forthcoming engagements signed a number of letters I had written, worked on a speech for Turnford School for later in the evening. Still very humid, sun shinning through.

Change, off to Turnford School for sports awards,  dance and gymnastic display. Met with headteacher. What a wonderful evening, nothing but praise for the young students, what talent. Gave a speech to a huge response from the students and audience. I was blown away by their reception. I cannot say enough but thanks to all the teachers, parents, children, and dedicated PE team. Stayed behind and spoke to a number of enthusiastic students and parents.  My thanks.

An extremely hot evening.

14 07 2010

On county duty, chairing education appeals at Ashlyns School, Hemel Hempstead. A very impressive school, picture Haileybury and you would not be far wrong. Long day, difficult cases. I had a new clerk, we did not gel, made a difficult day longer.

Still quite warm with rain falling, first for a long time.

Late returning home, then out to Cheshunt School for the end of year arts inspiration show. Very impressed with the display. All the work is GCSE or AS course work submitted for marking and then returned, results in August. Spoke to chair of Governors, nice lady, staff and some of the students producing the work. Very polite, informative and clearly talented. I did enjoy this, stayed longer than planned, nearly two hours.

Spoke to a young person who moved me with emotion. The student told me about being a young carer to a single parent since the age of 8 and was now nearly 16, with the difficulties it entailed.

I was taken by the account and the manner it was put over, no regrets, no bitterness, just care and love. The student was articulate and passionate about the  role and spoke up for countless others in the same position. The student asked to visit me at my Parlour to see how there may be ways of achieving funding and awareness. I would gladly have such a meeting and arrangements will be made.

I could not help but dwell on the story I had just heard, as I left I looked up at an angry sky with rain falling. I will do all I can to help.

15 07 2010

Chairing meeting on education appeals admissions in Hemel Hempstead. My old clerk back, good day all very smooth.

First break in weather cool, with rain but sun coming  through, no humidity.

Office to briefing on engagements, signed a number of letters and collected papers for visit to John Warner School.

John Warner School for year 7/8 end of year awards. Nice evening spoke to a number of teachers and met the new and outgoing Head and Deputy Head of years. Handed out prizes and gave a speech. My voice is going after a busy week.

An excellent school with good hard work ethos of learning and achievment. Strong head and chair of governing body, both ably supported.

Met with parents and their young child who has overcome a serious illness. Does voluntary work for charities and wishes to be involved in teens unite. School feel they can help after the summer break. Stayed later than planned and home late.

16 07 2010

Early start in West Sussex, home then office at lunchtime. Spent half an hour learning Polish for a forthcoming event next week. Spoke to two schools about forthcoming visits. Met two parents who were very complimentary about my speeches at two schools I attended during the week, very nice.

Meeting with arts officer regarding event on Sunday, spoke to Ian Orton’s secretary on some outstanding issues.

Left late then to Hoddesdon Society event, spoke with a number of people. Had an interesting conversation with one of the Hoddesdon Players. A definate chill in the air and became cold.

Went to the main house and spent a pleasant remainder of the evening with the lady of the house, Mary Parsons, and her family. Marvellous company and chat, stayed much later due to the warm hosts.

Weather forecast says it will warm up.

17 07 2010

Blustery day, fine and sunny with dark clouds above. Off to Broxbourne Primary School opening of gardens and school fete. Wonderful open space not seen for 45 years all laid out in a nature trail. Walked with the headteacher and the Rev. Tomkins and a number of the children. I have called it brigadoon, come to life and will be so every day. Met and spoke with a number of talented teachers, governors and the PTA, a thriving school community.

Toured the stalls and spoke to a number of nice people. Commissioned a painting from a local artist, such talent. Stayed just on two hours. Headteacher very nice to me. Quick change for my next engagement with the scouts. Rain held off.

Weather stayed fine. Warm sunshine but a cool breeze. Photo. session for the 100th birthday party of East Herts. Scouts. Made a speech and met an Anglo/Russian family. Very charming family, I seem to draw a diverse group. Met a lovely lady who knows the mayoress. Toured the stalls and saw days gone by in photos. super pictures of Joyce Ball when she was the Mayor. Spoke to a number of the senior scout leaders discussed the future. Really peaceful, enjoyable day. Home to catch up on corres.

18 07 2010

Out to WX for the ‘Big Lunch’, bringing communities together. Lovely chat to many people and some very good ideas exchanged.

Got showered in food from Cllr Seeby’s plate blowing in the wind, food that is not the song by Bob Dylan. Nice day declined a game of rounders not dressed for it. Stayed nearly and hour and half. Very warm in the sun although a blustery day, as Winnie the Pooh would say.

19 07 2010

Another very warm, humid day, the heat wave goes on. Out to Turnford School, met with Headteacher and members of the 6th Form Photographic and Art faculty. Tour of the unit, viewed some of their work going on show on Wednesday. Reviewed the work for the mayoral photo. portrait. looking good.

Toured the technology department met and spoke to teacher and students. Useful discussion and ideas exchanged.

A really warm reception, have promised to try and look in at the art show on Wednesday and see the dance class, cannot promise as I have a hectic schedule. Presented with a school tie and a  fairy cake (homemade), bless.

Home to collect papers. Text my daughter to wish her a happy birthday, had a phone call from my son in Barcelona, home tomorrow. Out to bank, dry cleaners and barbers. Made a reccy of the Eleanor Memorial ahead of Saturday, looks good although notice the railings had not been painted. To office, spoke to the leader, Cllr. Seeby came into the Parlour for coffee, talked over a few issues. Home to change and then to the George Fuller Club for the blind.

Met with a group of elderly people some blind others partially sighted. Concert laid on for them, a nice jolly evening well appreciated by everyone. Made a short speech, met a number of the committee and elderly people. Thanked all those who give of their time to help others, there is no more nobler cause. Well done.

Spoke to a mother and her young son who are volunteers and have been going to the club for over a year. The young boy, a pupil at Broxbourne School aged 14, attends with his friend having been spurred on by Noel Edmonds urging people to volunteer. A really remarkable gesture. These are the sort of young people the borough can be proud of.

Hot evening.

20 07 2010

Out fairly early to Roselands School for special assembly for year 6. Very warm morning. Trouble at mill on arrival, parents cars using space blocking the scouts entrance next door, not gone down well, scouts have arrived.  Over 250 in the school hall very warm. Emotional send off for year 6, lots of proud parents. Memory lane travelled by the children from reception to year 6. All the entertainment done by the children, exceptional performance. All present very pleased.

Lots of tears, photos. and stories of years past. Spoke to many of year 6, very polite and positive. School ending at 2pm, they are off to party treat later. Photos. with retiring teachers, wished them well. Not a dry eye around. Took me back to my school days, memory lane was now with me. Left late to next appointment.

Civic Hall, met some customers who were pleased to see the mayor. Caught up with the Broxbourne in Bloom judging team. Coffee and a sandwich just to chill out, given a briefing. Back to office to deal with corres. and engagement planning, trying to fit everything in. Last practice of my Polish, got the thumbs up from my tutor. Still very warm.

Home to shower, change and out to the launch of the new Polish Association. Still warm but a gentle breeze blowing. Chatted to a few of the voluntary people I knew. Thanked Ivy for her organising the Big Lunch day on Sunday, did enjoy it, explained why I dipped out of the rounders game. She is very sun burnt, result of throwing herself into the rounders games, you can see why I gently declined.

Ivy is doing good work in getting communities together, her big event is in September for the communities day, after that we lose her to the regions. A big loss for us.

Excellent company with the Polish group, met a large number of very nice people, I think this will be a success. A number of county and borough councillors attended. My Polish went well as did the whole evening. I really enjoyed this event. Glad I went and hope to return.

Dziękuję Polska.

21 07 2010

Warm day with a welcome breeze for relief. To Cedars Park to meet up with the Anglia in Bloom judging team and officers from the council. Briefed on the day so far and the remainder that is planned. Chat over issues.

Stop and spoke to a number of visitors enjoying the warm sunshine in the park. Surrounded by  school children who want my autograph on their T shirts, year 6 leavers whose shirts are covered in signatures, happy to oblige.

Return to office for meeting with Cllr. Welch, talked over a number of issues.

To Mayfield School to plant a tree to sign off the  closure of the school. They are joining with St Clement’s School from the start of next term. The new name will be Churchfield. Gave a speech, met a number of ex pupils and teachers.

A sad day but one to celebrate times past of children learning and laughter for over 50 years. More the sadder if they had not been around. Lovely warm afternoon. Had strawberries and cream. What a nice day.

Left later than planned to Turnford School, met staff from the art team and viewed the summer exhibition of the senior school work. Spoke to students and parents, some very good work on display.

Yet again left my glasses behind, this time at Mayfield. I will have to have my glasses and case sewn into my jacket sleeves.

Busy day comes to an end. The sun shines on.

22 07 2010

Wow no engagements, chance to catch up on paperwork. In at office, saw the leader and spent nearly an hour in discussion on various issues.

Meeting to discuss future events and to sort out filing. Various matters discussed. A quiet day still very warm. Starts to gentle rain as I leave, I think it was rain drops but it could have been sun drops because it is still very warm and it stops as soon as it started.

23 07 2010

Leavers church service at St Clements School. Bright morning but still humid. Greeted by Vicar and headteacher. Church full of parents and excited children. A day to remember, lovely songs, lots of tears and some very nice words said. Tears of joy and happiness, no sadness just celebration. Take good care and don’t be scared as you go out from here because there is so much more in store for you as you grow through the years. One more step along the road they go.

Spoke to a number of children, teachers, other staff, parents and members of the school community. Such emotion. I had to use my hankerchief, but, do not read anything into that, I just had something in my eye.

Return to office and then out to Goffs School and Cheshunt School to bade farewell to the headteachers who are leaving their school this term. Mr Drake who is retiring after 12 years as head and Paula Kenning who is moving to a new school after eighteen months at Goffs. They were both touched by my visit and said some very kind words. One more step along the road they go.

Evening engagement at Wolsey Hall, warm night but surprising the hall was cool. Met by a lovely young girl, Lucy, who presented me with a beautiful array of flowers and two of the most elegant curtsey you could wish.

A long show of dance both modern and classic. Well performed by some of the youngsters with perfect lines and points. The interpretation of the music was almost spot on. I really enjoyed the night, some scope for using parts of the production for a show later in the mayoral year. Spoke with a number of the children and parents, all very proud. Met Spencer, a 7 year old, very cheeky, a name to remember, has got real talent.

24 07 2010

Breezy day but a very warm sun. To WX for the unveiling of the refurbished Eleanor Cross as part of the 2 years and counting to the Olympics.

County Councillor cabinet member, made a speech, very dandy attire, as did the leader of the council and Mark Richardson, of Olympic fame. I cut the ribbon or rather undid the safety pin. There was an absence of scissors, local shop declined to help, pity, not to worry the show goes on. Lots of people, good fun and the festivities started. Shame the railings around the memorial were not painted. Cut backs I suppose.

The event has hit ‘You Tube’ click below on the link to view.

Met old and new friends, enjoyed my cake, drew the raffle and spent a pleasant 2 hours or more in good company. Met Mrs Norton and Mrs Cuthbert, 82 and 93 respectively, live in the Alms Houses in Cheshunt, what lovely ladies.

Still hot, unforgiving heat. Home to rest. Busy day tomorrow.

Cloudy start to the morning but as I arrived to the start of Hoddesdon Cricket week very warm sunshine. Met the President of the club, various committee members, wives and guests. Lunch then presented to both teams by the respective captains. Pleasant afternoon, good company, good chat and good people.

Left at 3.15pm to next engagement at Paradise Park fun day bringing communities together. Lots of people, lots of photos. and lots of hot sun.

Met with the Shaolin Team, a young group of children from Cheshunt who perform Kung Fu. Their base is just off Cheshunt High Street.

A delightful group of young children doing good things. They were semi finalists in this years ‘Britain’s Got Talent. They performed a special show for me, very impressive, promised to visit their club. Lots of photos. Not worried about Britain, Broxbourne has certainly got the talent.

Back to Hoddesdon Cricket Club to see the concluding final overs of the first session. Thanked all the members and drew the first raffle ticket. I shall be back at the club at the end of the cricket week to present prizes to the colts and make a speech. Very good day so far, very hot but very worthwhile. Home to shower, change suit and shirt.

The Mayoress and I attended the ‘Musical Moments’ show by Mayhem Theatre Arts at the Civic Hall.

Daleks are organisms from the planet Skaro, integrated within a tank or robot like casing. The  creatures are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. They make ming the merciless look like a pussy cat!.

Be warned, the only safe place to hide from a Dalek without being exterminated is behind the sofa!.

You guessed it I attended the opening of the three month exhibition at the Lowewood Museum of ‘Dan Dare to the Daleks’. Fascinating, Kim, a remarkable man who put it all together as a lifetime of love and work. Lots of people to marvel at the exhibits including the ‘Tardis. Wonderful. A must go see.

Back from my journey into another time. Office Engaged on reports and corres. Out to pre arranged business meeting with the charity and local large organisation. Very favourable meeting, really very excited.  Back to office with a bounce in my step, finish off some general stuff, before leaving late, horrible weather pouring rain but quite muggy.

12 08 2010

Glorious 12th, in office for a meeting with support team regarding September engagements. Further meeting to sort out charity events for next year.

Did not get an invite to the green flag event at Cheshunt Cemetry.

13 08 2010

Friday the 13th, with some trepidation I set off for Grundy Park and the extreme sports day. Some death defying obstacles await my fate. But, being Mayor I can quite easily side step any invitation to have a go.

Stuck 30 foot in the air with no where to go did not really appeal. Still, lots of people had a great day. My feet stayed firmly on the ground and I had a go with Cllr. Jackson at beating the goalie. Much more sensible.

Cool day, watery sunlight, rain and dark clouds looming. Time to go.

At office, time to pop in and see communications, really good people, congrats. on recent press coverage. Chatted to Community Safety Team, again good workers to have on board, sorted out some issues.

Oh well being Friday time to go home.

17 08 2010

Happy to support the petition

18 08 2010

Attended the constitutional panel at the council. I have been struggling for the past few days with a bad back which has affected my mobility, it was a struggle to get to the meeting. Very useful. To St Alban’s regarding a meeting on the new group school admissions panel for parents which I co-piloted for county. It will now be rolled out next year across the county.

Home to read the papers, back still giving me jip, if anything worse today. Read the Mercury and saw a picture of the VJ Day wreath laying which I knew nothing about, did my back no good seeing that. Will find out why the Mayor was not in on this.

22 08 2010

Cedars Park for the raising of the renewal award of the Green Flag and music festival being held in the park. Weather stayed fine, back a lot better. Very good day, made a speech, lots of people and photos.

These events and awards do not just happen, a lot of people do some incredible things behind the scenes to make it happen and yet again Broxbourne has come up trumps. As Mayor I do appreciate the  efforts along with the vast majority of the peoples of the borough.

During the afternoon a number of people commented on how good the park is, and one older man asked me to try and protect the park(s) and its events from whatever cuts and sacrifices there may be on the horizon in the country that may filter down. I was happy to say yes.

Onto Tesco County Club for the annual Bakers and Sweeps 5 a side football tourney. Arrived for the finals, lots of support. Presented the cup and medals to the winning team. Had a long chat with the committee and sorted out the Boxing Day Match, soot, flour and all.  Accepted an invitation to their dinner on 27th October. Long day, back starting to play me up.

Extreme Sports part 2, this time at Cheshunt Park. Weather very poor lots of rain and most definately umbrella time. Still quite a few taking part in the various activities. Spoke to the organisors and a group of young lads who were keen for me to get the council to invest in a new skateboard park. All were very positive to say how much there was around in the borough for young people and they spoke of other areas that were not so good.

Good news on the charity front another large donation, things are certainly looking up. Most of the teens unite tem will be competing in the charity bike show. No news yet about Boris, fingers crossed.

26 08 2010

31 08 2010

Holiday week-end over out to the Teddy Bears Picnic at the Civic Hall, much activity lots of bears. Bravely I go into the woods with Whitstable Bear , a much travelled friend. Met daddy bear and buttons, not too sure why, seemed to have taken a wrong turning out of panto land, a baby bear who did not seem to be enjoying the day, something about a sore head.

Very successful day, met an old friend and took a trip down memory lane, I could barely contain myself. Also, bumped into y Russian friends who I met at a recent scout day, very friendly people.

Off to Goffs Oak for the first league home game of Goffs Oak Football Club. Surprised about the size of the crowd, about 120 people unusually high for an amateur game. Even more surprised to learn that about 100 had come from all over the country. Birmingham, Leicester, Lincoln and two from Newcastle, they are part of a roving group of people who travel the country visiting various grounds, a hobby bit like train spotting. Unbelievable. Home team wins 6-1. Very enjoyable evening, lots of photos. Good fun.

01 09 2010

New month, new problems and new things to do. In office sorting out letters for the Mayor’s Cadet and Mayor’s debate, also some charity work. Lots to do. Left late. Back in the evening for the briefing on the electoral commission work to sort out boundary wards. All up for election in 2012. Oh dear up for re-election, two years early.

Took tea in the parlour with Cllr. Seeby, nattered about odds and ends and things. Leader popped in, very bouncy had a string of ideas about the commission work. Plenty to think about.

02 09 2010

Office day more problems, the choir for the Civic Service in October apparently is not available, now choirless. Meeting on Tuesday, got the week-end to find a choir. This is where we need Anika Rice. Corres. to sort out, lots of events to fit in and becoming doubled book. Good news on the charity another fairly large cheque has come in. Letters done and sent out. Lots of meetings next week. New month new problems.

03 09 2010

Gremlins seemed to have got into the pages, working to get it sorted. Do I need this.

04 09 2010

Gremlins on my web are being beaten back, I have a team of gremlin busters at work and they came up trumps. The bugs defeated. Back to business, off to Dobsons to celebrate their 75 years in business in the town. What a wonderful group, lots of very nice people from the top of the company right the way down to all the staff. Lots of photos. chats and good cheer.

Missed out on the roast potatoes and cake, never mind. I really enjoyed the day. Made a rather longer speech than normal but worth it because I am very glad that they are in business in our borough. Long may they continue and here’s to the next 75 years.

Quick turn around and over to Grundy Park to meet the Herts. and Beds. Ambulance chief and the two paramedics along with a council employee who saved the life of a man who had collapsed at the centre. The council worker acted quickly and with the help of a colleague dealt with the casualty, applied CPR and revived him for the medical team on their arrival.

The man recovered and is still in hospital awaiting heart surgery. It is clear from all accounts that without the timely medical intervention by the council employee the man would have died. Certificates were handed over in recognition to the council worker and the centre for their help at the situation. I made a short speech and spoke with the family of the casualty. What real good work done by so many. I have promised to visit the ambulance station in College Road.

Over to Hoddesdon for the opening of a new business, good good day for jobs in the borough. Met a group of people awaiting my arrival. Took a tour round the new refurbished premises of the salon, met the family and friends. Helped cut the ribbon and said a few words. Good luck to all in the future.

05 09 2010

Cheshunt War Memorial to re-dedicate for the inclusion of those who lives were lost from the community in the second World War. A very moving event. Lots of tears and solace to the family and friends of those who have gone home from a conflict long ago. Not before time are the names now entered and remembered.

To Letchworth for the Civic Service for the Chairman of North Herts. Held in the Free Church in the town centre, a simple but effective service, good choir of children, nice cakes and met up with members of the chain gang. Thoughts are still with the morning service.

07 09 2010

Busy day of meetings. Met with Cllr. Greenhill who had asked to see me. Took tea and chattered over a number of issues. Constructive and positive meeting. Later, a meeting with officers and members of teens unite, discussion on the charity need for a respite home in the borough. Briefing in the chamber on the tower centre in Hoddesdon.

08 09 2010

Site meeting at the Civic Hall regarding the Charity Gala in February 2011. Briefly over to industrial estate in Hoddesdon regarding the showman town centre event in October, photo. opportunity for the charity. Back to Civic for the panto launch with the stars of the show. So funny, lots of laughs and photos. tour around the town centre to promote the event, went down well, oh yes it did. Gillian Taylforth perfect star and looking forward to the Christmas Panto Show. She has agreed to get to the Charity Gala, will chase her up, oh yes I will.

09 09 2010

Charity Bike ride from the Council offices along the River Lee tow path into London and the Limehouse Basin, what a day. Glorious sunshine, considering the down pour the previous day. A huge thank you to everyone from Broxbourne Borough Council who took part in the 40 mile bike ride from the Council offices in Cheshunt to Limehouse Basin.

The Teens Unite team also took part in the 40 mile bike ride. Everyone set off from the Council Offices by local MP Charles Walker, The Borough Mayor Mark Mills-Bishop and the Council Leader Paul Mason. With the sun shining even a few punctures couldn’t put a dampner on the day.

A few hours later everyone was greeted in Limehouse Basin at Gordon Ramsey’s pub The Narrow by The Mayor, The Leader and Teens Unite Founder Karen Millen OBE before they had to start the journey home. It was a truly great day not only raising funds and awareness but was a fun day out too. Hope that there isn’t too many sore bottoms today!

10 09 2010

Out to Hatfield for a briefing session on education matters, this is another hat I wear. As a Chairman of Education Appeals I need to keep up with events. Gave a short resume of this year’s trial for group sessions on hearing the first stage of the appeals. Went well and it was agreed to roll this out across the county.

11 09 2010

To St James Church, Goffs Oak for the Stitchers event. Lovely items on display with all sorts of arts and crafts. Beautifully constructed. Met some old friends made new. Had lunch with the Vicar. Bartered with a young boy over a book mark, tough cookie. Photos and fun. Slight mix up with the raffle draw a lady came forward and gave a wrong name, soon sorted no tears and everyone happy. £500 was raised for church funds. Nice day, nice people.

12 09 2010

Busy day a number of events. The deputy is going to cover for me at a church service in Hoddesdon. First to Cedars Park for the community diversity day. Started my speech in French, met a family who I had seen before at a language presentation day. Went well. Lots of involvement, made a number of contacts to follow through. Hot day, survived on bread and water.

Over to John Warner School for an inspirational swimming day with two Olympians, one a silver medalist from the Bejing games, can’t be bad. Gave a speech. Left to return to Cedars Park to see the close of the day. Met some old favorites, really good afternoon, a lot of hard work by so many people. Well done. Back over to Hoddesdon to see the end of the swimming sessions. Very inspirational. Swimming club decided to hold a collection for my charity. Wow.

13 09 2010

Only one meeting for the Constitutional Panel. Very interesting and secret.

14 09 2010

Only one meeting for the Environment Services Committee. No problems quite a quiet meeting.

15 09 2010

Long day of events. Out of town to Sudbury for the Anglia in Bloom awards, on the road by 8am ish, not a good early starter. Arrived in Sudbury just after 10am ish, lovely town, venue bit odd, trading estate seen better days, the civic function building seen even better days. Not met, very cramped lounge area, not good. Pyrexy cup of coffee, cleared tables myself, um!!.

Long and drawn out prep before the awards got lunch at 1.20pm ish, salad! um!!!. Very hungry woofed it down. Won silver in Best City cat. Special award for Oliver Grimes, late of St Mary’s School, for his photo. of a Robin in flight, used on the awards presentation citations.

Left for journey home, had to be back by 4.30pm to host tea party for the children of Broxbourne for the Broxbourne in Bloom winners. 4.20pm arrive at the Civic Hall in Hoddesdon, phew just made it. Large number of children, teachers and parents awaiting my arrival. What a tea party, lovely. Braved a joke from one young 8 year old, made a speech, lots of photos. and happy winners.

No peace, quick turn a round parents turn in the evening. Big numbers. Presented Oliver Grimes with his special award and gave out prizes to all the winners. Made a speech, lots of photos. and happy winners. Talked with a great number of people and the parents of Oliver. Will make an appt. for Oliver to do a portrait of the Mayor. Home late, dog tired.

16 09 2010

Another busy day ahead. Over to Ware to the offices of the CVS , a support network for voluntary organisations which cover Broxbourne and the rest of East Herts. Wonderful reception, met all the team and had a really good visit. Photo. taken, little speech and the promise from CVS of help to an new call I am launching towards the end of the year. Nice people, nice day.

Return to the office for a rather long meeting with Cllr. Greenhill.

Off to the Old Pond for the presentation of the 5 star hygiene award to a local cafe. Well received, photo. call.

Back to the office for tea with two young boys and their mothers. Made a presentation to award them for voluntary service to the community. Remarkable pair, off their own bat volunteer to work for the George Fuller Club for the Blind and have done so for the past 14 months. Went on longer that anticipated. Missed the Olympic meeting but made the Finance Meeting. Long day. Off late.

17 09 2010

Fun day ahead, off to Holdbrook School in WX for a community fun day. Weather good bright and breezy. Go in the back entrance and miss the official welcome party, caught them on the hop. Address the school and open the day. Really good friendly and warm reception. Stayed much later than planned.

18 9 2010

A very busy day lined up. EH Scout fete at 1pm, but at the filed early with LM and son to set up a beat the goalie stall for youngsters and to highlight teens unite charity. Long day, lots of interest not much in the way of funds. T shirt sold. General feeling around the stalls, lots of people not much spending a clear sign of the times. LM and son did well. Left late, 5pm to get changed and go the village hall in Goffs Oak.

Race night at the village hall organised for my charity by the Goffs Oak Community Association. I have never seen so many people in the village hall. Standing room only lots of fun, never seen the association like this. Excellent evening, left at 11.45pm. Long day over.

19 09 2010

Civic Service at Lemsford Church for the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield. The Mayor was at the church door, gave me a prezzie from Whitstable, very nice touch.

20 09 2010

Abseiling down a 9 storey building, no not me, but four hearty souls did for charity and raised lots of money for teens unite. Carnival fun in the air at Grove House, when just after 5pm the plunge began, really brave people. Gave a speech to the crowd, as did teens unite. Cannot thank Broxbourne Housing Association who organised the whole event with contractors, Avalon and Enterprise, real stars of the borough.

Quick dash to Herts. Uni. for the Service for Sports Awards for Herts. Got on stage and said a few words and presented the Sports Personality Award of the Year to an Olympian, unfortunately not here, in America studying, um! no link so dad collected it for him, nice. Met some members of Broxbourne Cricket Club, they are going to invite me to their first home league game next season, nice.

21 09 2010

To Churchfield School for dedication service to the new school. Met by the children at the gate. Lovely warm day service held in the playground. Touching service, lots of warm feelings. Went into the hall for a cup of tea, took a piece of carrot and nearly choked to death. My life was saved by the lead member for education in Herts. phew. Not sure how the succession would go the deputy mayor is out of the country, still soldier on.

22 09 2010

Day spent chairing a meeting on education, long day had to get back for charity football match for teens unite. At Grundy Park for the prelim. to the Mayor’s Cup between Broxbourne Housing Association and Broxbourne Council, a local derby and clash of the titans. Unfortunately, the council had no contest as they romped home 11-0. Much work needs to be done before the real contest of the Mayor’s Cup to be played later. Honour needs to be restored (and much training). Collection made for the charity, a real winner.

23 09 2010

Again, out all day with education appeals, long day of chairing some difficult cases. Not able to attend the funeral of Paul Cully. A sad day. Later in the evening to Sheredes School, award night for KS3, 4 and 5 examination. Oh no, arrived late, mix up with time, arrived a few minutes after the start of events. No real problem my speech was much later. Gave a good speech which was well received. Stayed late and chatted to students and proud parents, nice. Good school needs to celebrate more of its achievments does so much and a jewel in the crown of the borough.

24 09 2010

Wet horrible day, winter on way. Had coffee with the residents of Cliff Richard Court as part of the Macmillan Day to raise funds. Lively affair, met Norman Wisdom look alike, thought he had moved in. Bought a doll for my g/daughter. Spent most of the rest of the day at the office.

25 09 2010

Grundy Park Shokk Day, launch of new youngsters gym training. Lots of new equipment in a refurbished part of the centre. Eager and willing young peopl trying out the weights. A two day affair that ought to gain a number of new members. Later in the evening to the Civic Hall for the East Herts. Operatic Society, production of ‘Little House of Horrors’. What a show, very slick, professional and excellent. Went back stage and met the players. Well done all round to everyone involved in this show an absolute credit to the amateur profession. Stopped and chatted to lots of the audience who had a really good night, old friends and some new ones met. The LM and I had a very good night. Chips on the way home.

26 09 2010

Civic Service for the Mayor of Hertsmere in Bushey. Simple affair with lots of food afterwards, a really harvest festival type spread.

27 09 2010

No engagements, going to the office later, builders in.

28 09 2010

Went to Grundy Park for a photo. opportunity for the upcoming Jobs and Skills Fair. Met a chap taking part in the fitness regime following a stroke, he has been a constant visitor for 7 years. Remarkable man and extreme effort on his part, ‘living is moving’, and is an inspiration to others.

Office to catch up on paperwork and discuss with my PA engagements past and to come. To Fourfields, better to arrive than not to arrive at all.Evening meeting at the council offices for the Planning and Licensing.

30 09 2010

To Churchfield Primary School for years 5/6 democracy and citizenship class. Held three debates on the merits of a planning issue. Really well presented by all the classes. Thoughtful and structured points put over. Oh dear, being mayor you do need the patience of Jobe and the wisdom of Soloman. Gave my decision, well received. Children impeccable, well mannered and a credit to their schools. Well done.

Returned to the office, detected an air in the building, read some unwelcome papers, a cold wind is blowing. Stayed late to catch up on some paperwork.

01 10 2010

New month, winter is on way miserable day pouring with rain, have not won the premium bond 1m, so life carries on. Those halcyon days of summer seem long ago. Over to Hoddesdon to a nursery recently started up, very keen to encourage new enterprise and job creation. Met by the staff, lovely setting and children all dressed up as super heroes, none in a mayor’s costume!.

It is a charity morning for children with brain damage, happy to support and encourage. Speak to the staff and a mum. All very nice, given a tour and plenty of photos. Stayed just short of an hour, had tea and a cake.

Back to office, still raining and gloomy. Meet with several people, an air hangs over the building touch and sense it. Speak to a number of people, gloom all round. Economic tsunami will soon engulf the lives of many people. Tried to sort out an number of issues, read a long report from an opposition cllr.

Move into my next week’s diary, lots of engagements and heavy for speeches, will write some over the week end. Silver line around dark clouds, took possession of over £500, part of the bike ride money. Good discussion about forthcoming charity events for young people in Nov. and older people next year. Had a nice email from Jo (children’s centre), warm glow on a cold day brings Friday to a close.

02 10 2010

Goffs Oak Village Hall with the Lady Mayoress for the last night performance of ‘Fish out of Water’ from Cheshunt Dramatic Society, packed house and eager anticipation from the audience. Did not disappoint, slow start but soon got into the action. Met some old friends, Hoddesdon players on a spying mission and made some new. Lady up from Essex wanted a photo. with me as a momentoe of her visit, bless. Spoke to the cast and left in the most torrential, monsoon rain of biblical proportions, I was more like fish in the water!.

03 10 2010

Cuffley beckons for the annual craft fair featuring the Goffs Oak Guides. Arrived at 12 noon a couple of minutes after allowing for parking. Told I was expected at 11am, can never win, my time was 12 noon, better to arrive than not at all I always feel, whatever. There to enjoy the company. Hit with many of the other guides who wanted me to be at their event later in the year, happy to accept, check out the times!!.

Asked by a group of guides to speak to a headteacher about their school uniform, a mayor gets many requests, back to the wisdom of Soloman. Met some very old colleagues nice chat, got a tip from a friend about hits on my site, happy to oblige and have now put a counter on the first two pages from today, Sunday 3rd October 2010, at 5pm. Time ticks on, gosh times does fly here it is at 2.15pm over 2 hours at a craft fair. Must go whoops no one around lost my guide, never mind spoke to the doorman.

04 10 10

Office day to ctach up sort things out and prepare for the new week. Lots to do and little time available. Had tea in my office with two young ladies one taking part in the Civic Service. Watched a video of the two versions sung of Amazing Grace, one with and one without soundtrack. Amazing, excellent and so so good. Very proud of Roxy. Up to her about the soundtrack, secretly hope she choses without the soundtrack she has a lovely voice. Fingers crossed.

05 10 10

Office 10.30ish, no PA off for the day. Had meeting with Cllr. Jackson, difficult political issues to deal with outside my mayor role. Missed Karen re. Civic Service.

Out to Classic Chips for a photo. shoot re. their 5 star award. Met up with Karen and discussed Civic Service, very encouraging update. However, yet another disappointment from the church, first no choir, disaster, then no bells, ding dong, now no church ladies available to make cakes, takes the biscuit, therefore no one to serve afterwards and so late in the day. Soldier on, one more step along the road I go. Karen on plan B for the tea and cakes.

06 10 2010

Lunch at the golf club, not that I play golf, it is the Seniors Open Golf Tournament. Dreadful start to the day with horrible weather, brightened up as the day went on. Good turn out, some bad some good scores returned. Hole in one on the 17th, not me though I was on the 19th.Good lunch, good speech and good company. Presented the prizes met some old and new friends, made contacts for my charity. I gave up golf when I was a caddy, on the 2nd hole the golfer asked me for a sand wedge, I asked him if he wanted brown or white bread, ended my days on the golf course, not my fault I thought he was hungry. Back to the office for some paperwork before getting ready for a meeting with the Italian Community. Went on longer than I thought, long day home late.

07 10 2010

Busy day ahead, lots of appointments. Day starts at Grundy Park for the Jobs and Skills Fair. Lots of prelim. chats with organisers. Open fair to a rousing speech to the exhibitors, call to arms, WX the frontdoor to London and the Gateway to Hertfordshire and all that. Went down well. Spoke to loads of people. Met a very nice photographer, freelance taking shots. Greeted and spoke to many people seeking jobs and information.

Had lunch at the office before heading off to Hoddesdon for the start of the Street Fair, history in the making and to be made. Made an encouraging speech to a well drilled crowd before ringing out the bells to signal the start of the fair. This was a charter rights fair relocated from playing fields nearby to the town centre. Took loads of people around the event tried out the dodgems, biff bang, and the merry go round, more my style. Many happy children and many happy people. The event movers and shakers had worked hard to make this happen and it was very much part of my theme to restore history.

Over to the Broxbourne Campus at Hertford Regional College for a tour around and photo. opportunity of the new locality police station on the campus. The council has put a lot of effort and money into this project. The venue will open in a few days.

Tight for time, over to the Marriott Hotel for the AGM of the Citizens Advice Bureau. Handed out certificates, not called to speak (I had one ready just in case), disappointed as I had something to say and gave up the opportunity of a big event at HRC awards night for apprentices, which, I very much buy into (had already written a speech) and had an expectation I would go, went last year as deputy, but, thought I ought to go to the CAB, ah well.Long day over, lots done and very tired. Still new day tomorrow.

08 10 2010

Another busy day. Up very early to attend an Olympic Breakfast meeting for Broxbourne businesses ahead of the 2012 games, the White Water Rafting event is being held in the borough at WX. Arrived at Paradise Park very damp and cold. Had a nice breakfast of sausage and scrambled egg, one slice of toast with light butter and orange juice, need to watch my weight.

The conference room was quite full, spoke to a chap from Radlett who ran some sort of graphics design company, from the programme recognised firms from around Hertfordshire, did not recognise those from the borough, although I bumped into a chap from BHA who I think are sponsoring a Hertfordshire athlete. On the top table were people from Hertfordshire Ready for Winners, the event was organised by Herts. Business Link.

The leader of Broxbourne Council was Chairing the meeeting but it was managed byHertfordshire Ready for Winners. Took a seat in the audience alongside the Broxbourne Council Chair of the Olympics sub Committee, other senior councillors for community were present along with senior officers of the council. Felt overdressed as I was wearing my mayoral chain.

No one from our side (Broxbourne) spoke, except the council leader who introduced the speakers and spoke to open and close the meeting. Put my speech away, I thought I was going to be like a mayor who opens a conference and wishes the day well.

I had a couple of good jokes to set the tone for so early in the morning. ‘I enjoy an Olympic breakfast, the last time I went for an Olympic breakfast was when I was on the A24 to Brighton and I stopped off at the Little Chef, but my world has now ended when a top chef was drafted in by the Little Chef company and he has turned the menu upside down’. The other one was about lions, still could not stop, off to the World Mental Health day event in Cheshunt.

Had a tour around met some nice people, spoke to the local MP heard his speech and applaud his commitment to the cause of mental health and laud his efforts.Office for a quick roll (and tumble), before setting off to the awards degree ceremony in Hoddesdon for students from the Broxbourne campus of HRC.

Met up with the stage party, order of running made before making a grand entrance into the hall. Well done to some many people who have worked extremely hard to achieve, not an easy task for many of them. Posed for photos. spoke to many proud parents and grandparents. I am one myself, I know what your thinking, I’m too young, but there we are. Stayed longer than I thought but wanted to meet as many success people as possible. An award winning day all round.

09 10 2010

Hoddesdon for the community day at the Fun Fair. Nice warm day lots and lots of people, never seen the town centre so buzzing. Dozens of photos. and meets with lots of people clearly intent on saying how much they were enjoying the day. Real all the fun of the fair, a great day and a great deal of credit to those with vision and a sense of history, very much what I wanted.Grandaughter’s 1st birthday party, I know what you are thinking, so young to be a grandparent. Lots of fun, cake and play, full house and she enjoyed every moment, intent on not missing out. Happy day, party bags for all. Proud father and grandparent.

Back to the fair to see the night entertainment. Met up with, the police, shopkeepers, stallholders, residents and families with lots of children, All agreed what a wonderful day and a real sense of making Hoddesdon Town come alive. Stayed until about an hour before close. Great fun and a great day.

10 10 2010

Creepy day with the numbers, thought about staying in bed all day, under the covers!, but I am a brave Mayor and gamely got up and caught up with all my letters and emails.

11 10 2010

Meeting with the new headteacher of Cheshunt School. Very young, made me feel very old. Nice man with a sense of purpose and direction. Cheshunt is a school I like and needs some TLC, promised I would do all I could to help in his mission. Office to have a sitting for a portrait I have commissioned by a young artist. Met with him and his father all systems go. Look forward to the result.

12 10 2010

Office engaged, difficult week lots to do and some real complex issues before all of us. Mulling over events, letters and speeches to put together. Home for 5pm to collect the LM receive a message which I pick up problems for the Mayor’s debate, 3 schools have pulled out in the late afternoon. 6/7 senior schools had confirmed, plus the College and Youth Connections.

Back to the office, take soundings, the debate will go ahead. Stay for late meeting on P&R. More discussions and late night emails. Still to finish opening speech. However, it is good to marvel at the TV to see the Chilean miners prepared to be rescued, I think I have problems. Good luck to them all.

13 10 2010

Difficult or decision day for the Mayor’s debate, no new drop outs, venue switched to a lecture room. Three schools arrive, Cheshunt, John Warner and The Broxbourne, HRC had a no show. Buffet reception held, three councillors attend and teachers from two of the schools, council officers, the leader of the council and me as Mayor. Wow what a treat, should never had worried about numbers blown away by the involvement of the schools. Despite numbers it was a resounding success, over ran the time from 8.45pm, stopped at 9.12pm.

There will be two further debates or coming together. All the points and issues raised will be tied together for consideration. Those who did not attend or not able, not only missed a real treat but missed a trick to engage.

14 10 2010

Met with the new headteacher of Goffs School. She has a drive and determination for discipline and achievement. Goffs has dropped in recent years on both counts. Promised my support. I brought up the subject of the Mayor’s debate, told me that they had a 6th Form open evening and had to draw in more children to help out. Umh, told her it was a treat, maybe next time, maybe. Bumped into the head boy who had led a deputation to my office a few weeks ago on funding for a voluntary organisation, also, met the caretaker, he is a scout leader and I have been involved in securing new premises for the troop. Fire alarm sounded, time to go or get caught in the rush.

15 10 2010

Hertford Regional College Ware sibling day for the opening of the Scott Building with the Government Minister and local MP present. Part of a £50m re-build of the Ware and Broxbourne Campuses. Bumped into Teddy, the Mayor of Ware, really nice man, always friendly, happy and positive, I do like him. Saw a local councillor whose aid I came to some months ago, looking fit and well. Nice opening of the building, words said by the principal of the college and the MP. photos taken, lots of people and lots of good company.

Popped into the Inspires Salon at the college promised to let the new students trim my beard and cut my hair, do not have much these days, pressure of office. A voluteer student went about her task with gusto. Really nice friendly young lady, positive, chatty and a dab hand at the clippers. Real buzz in the salon. What a superb job she did. Very, very happy. I wish her well in the career, gosh I look 10 years younger, 38 ish, cannot be bad. Leave having set a poser for the college PR people, can they find me another word for ‘Respite’, all to do with my charity for teenagers with cancer. Thinking caps on.

Move on, quick turn round to Cheshunt for an evening with the Shaolin Warriors, the Mayor’s Warriors, waiting for me in a guard of honour and what a super show they put on, no wonder they were in the semi finals of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ last year, Simon Cowell can spot talent. Tour of their clubhouse and a long chat with the leader of the warriors, useful discussion. I shall see what can be done for them to highlight the good work they do in helping out young people. Particular theme for me.

16 10 2010

Second of the ‘Big Draw ‘ events, this time at Hoddesdon under the clock tower. Met up with the usual crew and young artists from Hertford Regional College. Had my portrait sketched and photo. taken so it can be finished, unfortunately the rain came before the completion. Met some witch writers and saw the fairies who were all out today, bubbles and all.

17 10 2010

Super sunny day warm with autumn sun. Bells ringing all we approach the church good to hear them. Lovely service crammed to the belfry. All went very well, children from Holy Trinity excellent, Roxy stole the show, pitch and sound perfect and won over lots of applaud for her performance. A real talent. Readings all good, sorry, I made someone cry with my reading of ‘My Boy Jack’, touching for many. Really pleased with the outcome. A lot of hard work and the service was well received by the all the comments I had. A perfect service to remember all those who make our borough happen today, yesterday and to come, a real joy and songs of praise.

18 10 2010

Office in the morning sorting out odds and ends and catching up. Meeting with Head of Support Services and subsequently with the Head of Communications. Changes I intend to make will take place. Not able to attend group meeting as I am at the Civic Hall for an engagement. Arrive in plenty time meet some familiar faces. Handed out awards to the A10 School Sports Partnership (SSP).

A10 SSP started back in September 2005 and continues to grow (8 secondary schools and 34 infant and primary schools). Each family of schools with School Sport Co ordinator. They are PE specialists released from their schools for up to two days a week to work within their family of schools for PE and School Sport. They work closely with their own PE departments as well as the Primary PE Co-ordinators the Primary Link Teachers.

The main aim of the A10 SSP is to raise participation in PE and School Sport within the curriculum and out of school hours. To ensure that each pupil will recieve 2 hours of PE and school sport within the curriculum and 3 hours of physical activity outside of normal school hours and what a success it has been. But, these days of success do not just happen it takes a great deal of hard work, effort and commitment, by people who share many common values and goals, enterprise, community spirit and engagement.

To all the schools who take part and succeed within their community, to the vision and hard work of the coaches, tutors and volunteers, to all the parents and carers and of course to you the students a big thank you. We enrich our communities through sport building a fitter, better and greater sporting nation. Those participating in sport in the community are diverse, vibrant and a welcoming asset to the sporting community. All sections play their part; the challenge is to ensure that participation is achieved at maximum effort, they have done. The mission statement is about “enriching our communities through sport and participation for all” that is the challenge posed and many have achieved it. Lots of pleased winners. Gave a speech on stage which was well received.

19 10 2010

Early briefing ahead of full council. Difficult and tense meeting with a lot of technical data to go through. Took a number of emails during the day. At full council, slight difference to the start to follow my theme of culture, a poem was read out before prayers, an open hand and not a closed fist. Meeting excellent. Made a statement as part of the Mayoral announcements rather than my engagements. No problems all the difficult stuff passed through. Felt good, sausage roll and cup of coffee to finish off . Home late, very cold.

Office much of the day just sorting out things, here and there. Later to Cheshunt Golf Club, Quiz Night for the Mayor’s Charity, ‘teens unite’. It was a great success. The Mayor’s team were a miserable 12th, in fact bottom. I held a debrief with my team and they are currently enjoying a short break in Hertford Castle!.

The raffle raised £171.20 (not sure where the 20p came from but it ended up in the bag), if you add the table takings the figure will be close to £300, a magnificent and wonderful effort. Thank you to all the borough staff who embraced the event in such a wondrous way and supported the cause so well, generous of heart and kind of spirit. I am indebted to them for the wholehearted support on this and other events in support of the charity.’Look not at the purpose of life but a life of purpose’.The work for the charity is by no means over, there is a great deal to do but their efforts will go a long way in making a difference to the lives of some very special young people. A real big thanks to all those who took part and contributed not only on the night in funds, but, for the cause.

The Lady Mayoress and I went to see ‘My Fair Lady’ at Welwyn, lovely show well performed. The lead looked and sounded like a younger Barbara Windsor. Well entertained by the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield. Met an old friend and had a chat of days of old. Will make an appointment to see him.Home in time for the end of Match of the Day.

Difficult to know what to say about the Cheshunt Dance event at the Civic Hall, so I decided to show the letter I sent to the organiser.

Thank you for your recent kind invitation to the Cheshunt Dance School performance of ‘Dance Explosion’ at the Civic Hall on Saturday; it was an absolutely stunning show of performing arts and a treasure filled occasion from start to finish. I was particularly pleased to see how well some many of the company, including a number of young people, performed to a high level in a performance this could easily have been a West End show.

I am very excited and enthused at the prospect of doing all I can to profile the borough during the course of my mayoral year and celebrate it’s history, culture and heritage. Your troupe of dancers and performers did not let me down and it was a pleasure and joy to be in the company of you all. The Cheshunt Dance School is the Jewel in the Crown of the borough.

I congratulate you and your talented tutors on your efforts and recognise the good work you all do for the community, which, does not go unnoticed or appreciated by your Mayor and the wider peoples of the borough. Without your presence we would all be the poorer.

I am very proud to have your Dance School within our midst. I wish you all a very successful year and thank you for what you do for the culture and development of young people.

Please pass on my grateful thanks to all your team and students. I look forward to your performance at the Yuletide evening in December, giving me the opportunity to see you again at the highest level.
