GOFFS OAK SAVED

Many of you would have heard or read in the newspaper that the campaign to save Goffs Oak village from new electoral arrangements, proposed by the Local Government Boundary Commission to merge Goffs Oak with Bury Green, has been successful in its entirety. The commission in an unprecedented judgement has reversed its decision and come down on the side of Goffs Oak.

In its judgement published on Tuesday 18th October 2011, a day that will live long in the memory of the community, they concluded;

‘in response to evidence from local people and groups, the commission is recommending to move away from its initial recommendation for a Goffs Oak and Bury Green ward in favour of a Goffs Oak ward which comprises the settlement of Goffs Oak without the inclusion of Bury Green. Consequently the commission proposes a Rosedale and Bury Green ward whose boundary would be the Lieutenant Ellis Way dual carriageway’.

The full report can be seen by clicking on the link;

www.lgbce.org.uk

The next step is that the changes now proposed must be approved by Parliament. An order, the legal document that brings into force the commission recommendations, will be laid in parliament. If accepted, the new arrangements will come into force at the next election for borough councillors in May 2012.

The campaign by local residents and many others was right and the right outcome achieved. It was a straightforward common sense victory for the community, retaining the identity and community of Goffs Oak. A campaign of immense importance for many reasons, but, as I say not least our identity and village settlement.

Individually and collectively we all serve our community and at times come together to lobby a just cause. I am extremely grateful to the Goffs Oak Community Association for their unstinting efforts, the borough council, CEO, the Leader of the Council, Paul Mason, the local press, colleagues and to all those who attended meetings, delivered leaflets, wrote to the commission, spoke up, supported the cause, signed the petition, wrote letters, emailed, crowded out the village church and council chamber, a very big thank you; ‘We few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters)’.

It was by co-incidence that on Wednesday I was in Rosedale, a long standing engagement, to deliver an address on ‘The Community’. I know that with the coming together of Rosedale and Bury Green wards a thriving and vibrant community will blossom.

Please pass on the news to all your friends and neighbours, who may not be on the Internet or heard the outcome or not able to get out but just as keen to support the effort, (at the same time with the cold weather coming on check they are OK). I am sure a celebratory coming together of residents will be held next year at the annual community meeting in the village hall of the Goffs Oak Community Association, details of the date will no doubt follow in due course from the association.

Grove House is a nine storey tower block in Cheshunt, specialist contractors abseiled down the outside of the block to carry out work to insulate the flats. As part of the celebrations of the completion of the work, Broxbourne Housing Association in partnership with Enterprise and Avalon contractors held a fun day to watch the brave volunteer’s abseil down the tower block. All money raised from the event was on behalf of Teens Unite.

Many thanks for all those who supported the afternoon, councillors, staff from BHA, the contractors and residents, and of course all those brave people who took the plunge.

Four very brave people took part in a nine storey abseil down Grove House in aid of Teens Unite alongside Teens Unite ambassador Chris Firmager were Keith Trowers from Enterprise, Neil Cole from Broxbourne Housing Association and raffle prize winner John “The Caretaker” from Broxbourne Housing Association.

40 Mile Bike Ride

A huge thank you to everyone from Broxbourne Borough Council and others who took part in the 40 mile bike ride from the Council offices in Cheshunt to Limehouse Basin. The Teens Unite team also took part in the 40 mile bike ride.

Everyone set off from the Council Offices by local MP Charles Walker, The Borough Mayor Mark Mills-Bishop and the Council Leader Paul Mason. With the sun shining even a few punctures couldn’t put a dampner on the day.

A few hours later everyone was greeted in Limehouse Basin at Gordon Ramsey’s pub The Narrow by The Mayor, The Leader and Teens Unite Founder Karen Millen OBE before they had to start the journey home.

It was a truly great day not only raising funds and awareness but was a fun day out too. We hope that there isn’t too many sore bottoms today!

A delightful group of young children doing good things. They were semi finalists in this years ‘Britain’s Got Talent. They performed a special show for me, very impressive, promised to visit their club. Lots of photos. Not worried about Britain, Broxbourne has certainly got the talent.

Over 3,000 people turned out in blazing sunshine for the 16th annual Vintage and Classic Vehicle display. And there was a record number of vehicles with over 120 cars and 35 bikes all polished and glinting in the sunlight.

Car of the show was chosen by the Broxbourne Mayor, Mark Mills-Bishop (Con, Goffs Oak). He picked out a 1948 Daimler DB18 Drophead owned by Colin Croft of the Hatfield Heritage Vehicle Society. And his choice for the bike of the show was a Harley Davidson owned by Victor Bates of Cheshunt.

The next event will be the Classic Car Day which will be held in Waltham Cross town centre on Saturday 14 August between 10am and 3pm. There will be live music and a number of vintage and classic vehicles on display.

About 1,500 people visited Goffs Oak playing fields on Saturday to enjoy the fun as the 2nd Goffs Oak Scout group decided to organise the annual community event.Last year the village day did not go ahead at all and before that there was a scaled-down event and a parade round the field because of insurance problems.

Group Scout leader Edward Watt said they were extremely pleased with this year’s village day which they intend to build on in future years.

Broxbourne mayor Cllr Mark Mills-Bishop (Con, Goffs Oak) and Broxbourne Conservative MP Charles Walker, who lives in the area, went along to the fete which included a variety of stalls, bouncy castle, barbecue and archery along with a fire engine from the Cheshunt station and police car with the neighbourhood team of officers.

More than £1,500 was raised for local community and church groups, the Guides and Scouts.

Mr Watt said: “It generates a fair amount of money towards the upkeep of our building.”
